COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Dark crimson brown color, well carbonated with a little head. The aroma is piping with fig, raisin, rum & brown sugar; light alcohol. The flavor is spicy with sugars, alcohol & yeast; complex. Well rounded finish, very tasty.

Pours a very dark brown almost black with a nice had that doesn't stay very long. Sweet malty aroma with hints of alcohol and metallics. Flavour is very very sweet with lots of dark maltiness, and chocolatey brown sugar. Warming alcoholic finish is pleasant, nice syrupy body is not exactly thick but has noticable weight across the tongue. I like it. Thanks to IPfreely for bringing this one up for me.

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2006 This is the perfect drink for one of RateBeerian elders (i.e., an old guy) who just spent the last hour shoveling heavy snow during the height of the storm. - - - - - It begins with the bottle sparkling in my eyes... and no, I’m not snow blinded. They need a picture of this one here. It poured out a rich, deep mahogany with reddish highlights and a thin tan head. It’s got a light caramel aroma mixed with dark dried fruits. Not too sweet; just right. This is medium bodied and way too damned smooth. It’s full of rich malty, caramel tastes without getting as overbearing as some bocks do. It slides down very easily, leaving a sweet finish with a smattering of hop bitterness. You don’t really notice the 9.2% abv until it hits bottom and begins the warming process. I need WAY more of these.

Amber/brown color, offwhite head. Malty vanilla aroma with some toffee. Malty fruity flavor. You can tell this is quite a strong beer.

Warning! Early amateur rating! Very dark brown beer. Good carbonation. Treacly and rich, no bitterness. Slighty dry finish. Pretty nice!

Dark reddish colour with a beige head. Sweet malty aroma, caramel hints and notes of alcohol. Strong alcohol flavor but balanced with a nice malty sweetness.

Dark brown with dark ruby light thru, large rocky head on top .Its appearance would be pleasure to any beer lover. Sweet, solid cake dough aroma. Caramel with gentle bark of birch aroma wrapped with soft hoppy scent. Velvety nose, gentle with light alcoholic finish. More of dried fruit, maybe plum? Medium full bodied, with more exposed alcohol inside. Beautiful sipper for winter nights I must admit. Thick fruity malt with controlled sweetness to it like true fruity comfiture. Finish end with woody warm feel. Gem, a must try beer.

UPDATED: OCT 3, 2009 Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (overcooked caramel, dark bread, molasses), with light notes of dark brown sugar, alcohol, and sherry. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, syrupy texture, soft carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Nothing special, but drinkable.
