COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Pours a clear brown with tan-orange highlights, Quickly dissipating head. Aroma is a little whisky, grape juice, brown sugar, and sawdust (woody, but in a grassy way). Taste seems a bit absent at first, and it’s rather light flavored up front. A bit of tangy wood, grapejuice a brown sugar, toast, butterscotch malt, but it’s somehow watered down. Prickly carbonation that stings while adding no creaminess to this slick, somewhat airy beer. Finally some "strong beer" flavors appear in the finish, where all the sweet/bitter flavors reside. Finishes with a bit of brown sugar, nuts, butterscotch, toast/pumperknickel, grapes. Bitter at first, fades to nuttiness. Quite a letdown, as the Schloss Eggenberg (sp?) was better than this, and the Aventinus Eisbock way beyond both of them.

This beer kind of misfired for me. It was freshly delivered from Boston, thank you Clarkvv. A nice brown colour, but kind of sourish, some malts and toffee and stuff to sweeten some toastedness, lacking complexity to go with dinner. The Niagara Eisbock versions are sure a whole lot better.

Bottle at Peculier Pub. Raisins, alcohol, maybe some molasses. Smooth, but still weighty in the mouth. Just not my thing?

330 ml bottle @ home. BBE 26.10.2010.
Pours a bit transparent brown colour with a small off-white head. Weak Eisbock-style on the nose with wheat, syrup, banana and honey notes. The taste is weak too with roasted malts, banana and brown sugar. Medium bodied, oily/watery mouthfeel and low carbonation. Well hidden alcohol. Average Eisbock, though this bottle is quite old (see BBE). Needs re-rating I guess.

Very dark brown with amber highlights. No head. Fruity. Warm alcohol. Not really sweet. Not bitter. Fizzy, medium body. Not really a style for me. Too flat, too alcohol balanced. Purchased at New Beer Distributors, New York
