COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Best by 12/31/03, 9.2% abv. Dark red. Nice nose, lots of dark fruit (plums and raisins), some caramel sweetness. Big flavors, vinous, lots of port/wine character. Malts are strong, caramel, nutty, and a bit of chocolate. Alcohol is a mite overly noticeable with a burn at the end, but really quite lovely.

Pored nearly still. No head to speak of. First sip has a lot of viscosity and is candy sweet. Lots of prune and other dark fruits. Very warming, and the alcohol is getting to my melon quickly- spinning, spinning- oh, I feel good!! lallallallallallallallallalla Yeah!

Big beer. Syrupy, raisins in the nose. Brown color - almost black, with a tight head that leaves legs on the glass. Chocolate, nutty, spicey flavors. Dry end with a touch of bitter. Thick body and smooth as hell. Perfect balance and a clean palette. Fantastic.

BBD 12/31/03 9.2% abv. The deepest of rubies. Nice sweet malt nose, clearly tells you bock is afoot. Big sweet malt attack, but wins the battle with cloying. Well-done. Luxurious sweet maltiness rich and satisfying. Nice underlying bitterness. Finish has alcohol and some spiciness. How do they do this? Eku 28 is a mess, but this is fricking brilliant?

this is one big fat malty SOB! color is a deep brown with very slight head, just a few bubbles. aroma is loaded with chocolate and raisins. flavor is much the same but finishes with a metallic quality and a fair amount of dryness. this is one of the more surprising beers i can remember. the aroma is to die for.

Dark purple in color, with little head. Smells of grapes and alcohol. The alcohol is certainly present in the taste, which is expected, but it doesn't detract from it at all. Tasted of grapes/raisins with a bit of spice as well. Thick without being syrupy. Slight sweet aftertaste. Excellent beer.

Pours a clear and very dark brown with a lacy off-white head. Aroma is of brown sugar, anise and dried fruits; figs, plums and cherries. The body is full but not syrupy or cloying like many eisbocks and the CO2 is a bit high for the style. The flavors are med. sweet with fresh toast, mollases and and underlying vanilla character. The finish is clean with only the slightest hint of resinous hops. A near perfect bock. Great malty goodness.

33cl bottle. Cool label design: poured dark brown with a medium sized light brown head. Very rich aroma of caramel, figs, raisins, prunes, etc. Taste is very malty with all the dark fruits above. Starts off sweet and finishes nicely bitter albeit mild. Undoubtedly Kulmbacher’s best beer.

11.2 oz bottle. Holographic like the first issue of a big budget, winter-oriented comic book. SnowMan, or something like that. Something more clever. "Mindestens haltbar bis: 1522892" Okay. Babblefish says "At least durable to 1522892," and I assume 1522892 is the number of minutes the bottle will last after leaving Germany before it explodes. Gotta drink this fucker quick. Very dark red. Big brown head fades away, leaving traces of brown and white along the rim of the top of the beer with little clouds on the inside. Good lacing. Smells quite Belgiany, actually, like a Belgian dark pale ale. I was thinking it would be more like alcohol and bock malt, for some reason. Anyways, you got big, very ripe fruit, exceptionally sweet plums and soft peaches, backed up with a nice alcohol twang. Ahh, the bock malt is much more present in the flavor. Big fruit upfront--this has aged a bit but is not stale--plums, cherries, raisins, moving into a sweet, chocolately bock malt, and ending on more, very sweet fruit. A hint of alcohol lingers behind. Quite drinkable, in spite of its complexity and pop. I have no idea how old it is, thanks to my total idiocy, but I’m willing to bet that age has treated this well. The fruit complexities are great, and the alcohol is not at all overwhelming.

Available now at Belmont Party Supply in Dayton. Superb eisbock; malty (soooo toffeeish!), very fresh, quite sweet and almost too much so, alcohol is 9.2% - you'd never know. Besides Southampton's Double Eis (which is much much paler in color and even more vanillaey and caramelly) I cannot imagine a better eisbock. So much smoother than Aventinus.
