COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

I grabbed this one just by visually shopping at my new favorite store here in Albuquerque (I have since moved). When the "beer guy" at the shop told me it was a lot like Celebrator and that I could even do a side by side tasting, my immediate thought was something along the lines of: "Brother. You are really putting your reputation on the line here." It was my first suggestion from him and anyone in the store for that matter. I took his advice though and took a bottle of Celebrrator to do a side by side tasting. The two are virtually twins I feel, with minimal characteristic differences. The Celebrator has a more roasted quality and the Kulmbacher has a sweeter edge...and also 2.5% more on the ABV. Overall I appreciated this one quite a bit and was surprised how similar it was to Celebrator.

Tap at Capone’s. Dark brown with ruby hi-lites. Taste of toffee, raisins, chocolate and cherries. A little heat, but very nice overall. Mostly sweet finish. Beautiful beer!

UPDATED: FEB 25, 2011 Bottle from Kegs & Barrels in Plano, TX. Pours a nice looking deep dark brown with red hues and tan head. Aroma is of pure clean strong malt, prune and nice chocolate. Flavor is the same with nicely balanced bitter and nice warming alcohol spice. Mouth feel is medium-heavy body with medium-high carbonation. Overall, a very enjoyable beer....good shit! Yum!

a nice dark malty dopplbock with a bit of a alc taste but not too strong. A nice sub for all those angry ex- paulaner salvator fans out there

In my opinion this is the best eisbock that I have tasted full of good complex flavors and very warming

11.2 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a deep, dark brown with ruby highlights and a foamy tan head that disappears quickly to a ring that lasts throughout. Minimal lacing. Nice aroma of roasted malt, dark fruits, caramel, and a pleasant hint of alcohol. Flavor is tilted towards sweet but does have a nice grassy hop character in the background to add some bitterness and balance. Lots of roasted malt, burnt caramel, raisins, even a touch of coffee. Nice warming finish but not overwhelming. Full bodied. Not cloying.

This is quite a remarkable beer. It pours a deep, dark brown with a rich tan head that disappears quickly. This reminds me a lot of the Spaten Optimator, a dopplebock, but this beer has more spice, nuts, and complexity. The aroma is rich and sweet. Alcohol is barely noticeable in the aroma and more noticeable in the flavor. The palate is full and heavy. The flavor has brown sugar, nuts, and alcohol, and is quite sharp and bright overall. The flavor doesn’t linger long either. This is no doubt a great winter beer.

Beer starts with an excellent german dark roasted grain aroma. Beer poors deep mahogony with a slight white head. Flavor is excellent with hints of plum and raisin. Beer finish is suprising as I expected a sticky finish due to the alchol but this wasn’t the case. Overall this beer was excellent and I look forward to having it again
