COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

This beer was GREAT. Nose and palate of chili peppers, it was great for warming up to in the winter, but I’d love to have it with some light summer fare as well. So good!

Wow, tastes a lot like Troeganator which is a dopplebock and made me fall in love with craft beer. I know this is an eisbock, but they’re relatively similar. Dark fruit flavors abound, smooth alcohol flavor. I love it. Sweet, malty, dark.

Dark brown pour with a small tan head. Aroma of raisins, brown sugar, and sweet malts. Flavor is similar. Sweet and delicious. Slightly warming from the abv but not overwhelming. Solid.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a nice tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, raisins, caramel and molasses. Flavor was sweet, malty and nicely rounded with dark fruit, caramel, raisins, brown sugar, molasses and light toffee. Medium-full body, low carbonation, sweet warming finish.

In short: strong caramel beer Pours dark brown with almost not foam, malty aroma and caramel taste, very drinkable for its alcoholic content.

Pours black with carbonation. Has a strong prune and dark fruit aroma. Taste is very strong with dark fruits (mostly prune), raisins, caramel, malts, and some spices. A very complex and strong taste.

Sweet grainy malty aroma with a good deal of dark fruit. Pours very dark mahogany with an off white head that fades fairly quickly leaving faint residue on the glass. Sticky sweet. Malty. Fig, prune. Nicely boozy. Clean with a fairly thick mouthfeel. This is a really nice beer.

Oily rich. Spicy and fruity. Warming. Very Christmasy. I quite like Eisbook actually. I like the fact the alcohol isn’t hidden. I should drink more of this style.. in December.

Great eisbock, exactly as it should be: dark, strong, full-bodied without being heavy, rich, even complex. Notes to plums, raisins, marzipan, cake and liquor. Excellent with a dessert or a cigar; extraordinary by itself.

Tap @ Biermuseum Koln, large sample. Clear dark brown color with a reddish glow, short head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, molasses, caramel malt, hint of alcohol. Bit sweet, bit bitter. Nicely balanced and good complexity. Lovely classic german eisbock indeed.
