Mönchshof Schwarzbier- "the Black Pils"- is a brewing wonder and a brew-lover's dream. Supremely drinkable, dry and beautifully hopped, yet loaded with dark malt flavor.

Shared a 50cl bottle from Trinkgut (Wittlich). Pours a deep brown colour with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted, coffee, toffee and dry fruits. Average carbonation and medium to light body. Taste is médium bitter and light sweet with a dry and lightly astringent finish. Overall, a pleasant beer.

Reddish brown, almost black beer with huge blonde cloudy head leaving lacing on the glass. Aroma is nice with earthiness, coffee, dark chocolaty sweetness and little roasted malts. Flavor is dry and slightly sour with coffee and ashy roasted malts as well as dark bready. Palate is thinner than medium and slightly watery. Finishes with a bite of bitterness, leaving a dry ashy aftertaste. Enjoyable, but could benefit from a thicker body.

Bottle. Nice fluffy head. Lots of chocolate in the aroma, then some caramel, a bit of roasted grain and nuts, plus some raisin sweetness. Light tart, dryish, subtle upfront, the beer becomes gradually thickish and chocolatey, with a nice nuttiness retronasal. Very good, quality stuff.

UPDATED: MAR 14, 2014 500ml flip-top bottle. Served chilled and let come up in temperature. Good color, thin, lingering cream color head. Aromas of milk chocolate, banana, nuts, black bread, and mild dark, dried fruit. Similar flavors of chocolate, banana, nuts, dark bread and dark, dried fruit, with the addition of yeast, smoke and/or mineral. Absolutely wonderful, light, soft, and creamy mouthfeel. Very well balanced, fine carbonation. Lingering finish of the above mentioned flavors. Overall, a very well made, balanced, flavorful beer. Maybe I’m just a sucker for the highly drinkable, flavorful, creamy mouthfeel... Though I highly recommended. --- tasted while on a long journey to understand the world around me...

0.3 Litres: on tap in Dicker Vertin, Charlottenburg Berlin on 22nd Jan 2014. Pours a dark brown to black colour (what a surprise) with a full tanned head of sticky foam that sent me to wash my hands after picking the glass up the first time. Semi-sweet malts rule this brew and they let you know straight away by the smell. Chocolate and coffee aromas waft around the glass and fill the air. Those same malty aromas appear in the mouth as the malty molasses within the brew give of their flavours. I’ve knocked Schwarzbier body depth before, this however wasn’t weak and watery like so many: this had a good robust feel to it, almost rich and creamy in fact. One of the better beers I’ve had in this style.
