Mönchshof Schwarzbier- "the Black Pils"- is a brewing wonder and a brew-lover's dream. Supremely drinkable, dry and beautifully hopped, yet loaded with dark malt flavor.

A damn good-looking beer! The nose is of roast, malts, milk, and sugar. A pretty complew beer. The taste was woodsy and quenched thirst well. The hops are mild but present. Creamy malt linger. A good choice of beer to pair with good herb, maybe even better than an IPA!

Dark and mysterious. Or maybe the only mystery is what Mönchshof means. Bittersweet chocolate and licorice.

Nice

The coffe flavour dominates the whole tasting experiance together with a very light sour note. The body is light, common to German Schwarzbeers, but still a bit too light. I also miss some hop. The sweetness is there but humpble. Short and dissapointing finish. Overall watery. It tastes a bit like a light version of a German Schwarzbier. Try a better one first if you don’t know this style yet.

Reviewed on 02/09/14. Bottle, 500ml. A deep dark red beer with a big brown creamy head. Aroma is of roasted malt, coffee and alcohol. Taste is bitter with a heavy roasted character. Hints of chocolate and coffee. Some carbonation and astringency. Not very dense, yet rich. Pleasant sweet aftertaste.

Strong Schwarzbier with moderate hops, dark brown medium bodied, with ample sweet chocolate and coffee malts. Picked up an old beat up returnable swing top for $4 USD @ Total Wine.

Bottle from my father (bought in Germany). Dark malty smell with caramel. Similar taste with some roasted aromas. Hard toasted bread. Nice malty beer.

This beer pours a very dark brown color with a large off-white head. The aroma blends roasted malts and some earthy hops, and the taste has some a mild umami, slight malt bitterness, and a touch of sweetness with a really roasty aftertaste. The palate has a slick texture, medium body, and a soft carbonation.
