“The beer that bites back!” Bastard Kat IPA is an American IPA, brewed in the style of West Coast IPAs. The light golden ale is topped with a thick white head. Generous doses of hops throughout the brewing process, including the hop back and dry hopping, give Bastard Kat a crisp, citrusy, hop aroma. Hop bitterness and flavor are both pronounced, making Bastard Kat a natural for hop-heads. The finish is dry and crisp, leaving you ready for another sip.

Sampled during VCBW 2015 on the PNE grounds pouring a clear golden color with a small white head leaving spotty lacing behind. Aroma is floral with some hints of spice and citrus. Taste is a spicy , citrus hop bitterness with a grainy mouth feel and a light malty sweetness. Light bodied with good carbonation. Overall, this is a tasty IPA that just needs a little more malt backbone and body to be a better brew. Otherwise, an easy drinking brew.

Lots of resony hops and lots of herbal adjuncts that really add to the profile of this IPA. Quite good.

On tap @ Chuck’s 85th. Pours bright clear golden with very thin white head. Aroma is light nutty caramel malt, just a hint of earthy bitter hops. Taste is clean crisp pale malt, dry piney earthy hops come on plenty bitter. Body is pretty light for the style and abv. Finishes dry with faint lingering bitterness. Ok.

I was really expecting much more from the hops in this one. Dry pine needles and grapefruit aroma tops a light malt sweetness. Plenty of cereal malt and a light toast character in the finish. I didn’t think this matched up to many of the IPA’s currently on the market.

On tap at the original Bellingham taproom. Another light clear golden beer from Kulshan. lasting think dense fine head and lacing. Nice fresh citrusy hop aroma. Mild light maltiness pretty tame IBU bite that has a decent bitter trailer.

Light gold. Earthy spicy nose with a little bit of blackberry. Relatively low bitterness up front but grows in bitterness.

This pours from the can a yellow gold colour with an impressive head of billowy foam. Slowly shrinking foam reveals some nice lacing. The nose is of bitter citrus, grapefruit, and more bitterness from what I perceive as pine. Btw, there’s still a 1 finger head of foam since I poured it. A west coast IPA it claims to be and by golly, a west coast IPA it is. Deliciously bitter without being overly so. It’s more of a piney hop bitterness than a citrus one and that pine seems to carry just the wee bit of malt sweetness along for the ride. That, I think, takes the possible over the top bitterness to my palate to a more manageable level; it is still a very hop forward brew, mind you, but it rests in my comfort zone and that is always what I hope for in brews of this type. The mouthfeel? Lets me just call it perfect. Beertunes, mate, a big thank you for this wonderful nectar. I’m enjoying the long lasting aftertaste even now that my glass is sadly empty.

Draft - Fruity and lots of sweet mandarin. Clear gold with a rich white head. Light fruit and resinouse, but very light. Too light and underwhelming.

At the brewery. Pours straw yellow. Good head that mellows, good lacing. Smells of citrus, mango and some pine. Creamy texture. Taste is tamer for an IPA. Mellow citrus , some hop bitterness, bit if pine. Nice easier drinking ipa. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
