ďDonít be afraid of the dark!Ē Kulshan Porter is brewed in the Brown Porter style. Deep mahogany in color, the beer is topped with a rich mocha-colored head. The roasted barley aroma is accented with notes of coffee and chocolate. The flavor is smooth and silky with roasty-toasty grains blended with coffee, chocolate and a touch of toffee. The aftertaste is smooth and clean.

On gtap at the original Bellingham tap room. Clear dark brown witiha thin sandy head. Nice soft light roasted chocolaty aromas and flavors. Well attenuated and clean. Like all their beers. Moderate tastey middle of the road Porter.

Growler poured a clear reddish brown with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of roasted malt, bitter chocolate and earthiness with a smooth lingering bitter chocolate finish.

Draft - Chocolate dark malts and a bit of molasses. Jet black with a good rich beige head. Very thin dark malts and molasses with a bit of dark chocolate, starts nice but disappoints.

Draught at WA Brewers Festival, 2014. Pours a dark brown color, though lighter than I expected. Nose is roasty and slightly bitter, but seems like a stock and unremarkable porter recipe at first. Taste is slightly bitter and roasty, and entirely forgettable.

Draught at the brewery
Dark brown color, almost black, with creamy beige head. Roasted malt aroma. The flavor is also a bit chocolatey, and the muthfeel is smooth.
Nice Porter.

Sampled on tap at Kulshan tasting room, pours a very dark reddish brown with a small tan head. Aroma of light roast, light espresso beans, and cocoa powder. Flavour of very nice light roasted malt, dry espresso, and bittersweet cocoa powder. Great porter.

Very tasty and highly sessionable porter with a pleasant amount of roast, and lesser notes of creamed coffee and milk chocolate. Itís on the robust side, which I like, and Iím glad itís not overly sweet like many porters out there. Thatís not to say itís overly hopped / bitter, though, because itís actually really balanced. I hate to draw comparisons, but itís kind of similar to Deschutes Black Butte Porter, and that is a compliment. I really feel this porter will win awards if itís entered into beer competitions because, stylistically, itís right on, and flavor-wise, itís delicious.

Transluscent, deep mahogany brown with a small head and minimal but nice lacing. Dutch processed cacao and roast in the nose. Inviting aroma. Flavor reflects those, and is extremely dry with just a hint of coffee and woody smokiness. Body is reasonably creamy, firm, and true to the style, and the finish lingers nicely. I wasnít expecting much when I walked into this little neighborhood gem, but I was astounded by their robust and complex RIS, and while this beer isnít quite in that league, itís quite refreshing and flavorful.
