Drank on tap at the brewpub in Düsseldorf. Excellent balance between malty and bitterness. Nice bitter/dry final, that calls for more sipping. Elegant red colour with a finely bubbled head. aromas of nutty malts and herbal hops in the nose.

2.2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Tall flip-top bottle: best before 15 Dec 2012. Poured (three times) into one of my Hannen Alt glasses @ home during a random tasting evening on 16 Nov 2012.
Looks reminded me of a cola with a head that stayed longer than normal: certainly that colour anyway.
Poor nose: just weak malt notes and an earthy whiff.
The taste is also on the weak side: mildly malty but no depth or ’umph’ to the brew at all, a big disappointment to be honest. Maybe it’s better fresh or on-tap, but I doubt it. The beer did seem to grow on me a little as I got used to its flavours, there was some bitterness to be found along with those malts mentioned earlier but it still didn’t cut the mustard as a good Alt in my eyes.

2.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
Failry poor attempt tried at the brewpub. The fairly horrible smoke filled atmosphere didn’t really help. Brown and murky, smelt like it used poor quality ingredients. Cloying caramel maltyness,

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
The beer smells like a brewery, even if the brewery doesn’t. Fresh, nutty-grainy nose. Lightly sweet malty taste and mild bitterness. Some might see it as a fault but I like a bit of husky grain character, it strikes me as an honest taste. And a highly refreshing beer, in any case, although a touch more bitterness would help the cause.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Shiny brown body and pillowy beige head. Nice toffee, caramel, coffee, tutti frutti and earthy aroma. Low to medium carbonation, easily drinkable. Watery but not unpleasant body. Enough flavour here; light sweet at the start, some nice base bitterness throughout. Nice brew. (50cl bottle)

On tap at the brewpub.
Well balanced. Dry, but without the oaky edge the other beers in town tend top have.
More refreshing in summer temperatures, perhaps.
