4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Enjoyed from an 11.2oz bottle in a wine glass. The beer pours a very dark brown color, with a mild light tan head. The nose shows really spectacular notes of milk chocolate, Abbey/Trappist yeast esters, raisin, and prune. The palate shows milk chocolate up front, strong CaraMunich and raisiny Special B notes, a surprisingly lightly ester profile, and an almost candy-like final character. Carbonation is perhaps slightly low, but pleasant, given the high level of residual sweetness. The finish again shows a nice chocolate character, with a slightly stronger ester note than shown in the palate. Overall, a beer that is decidedly on the malty end of the style, just short of being cloying, but utterly enjoyable.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: MAR 10, 2016 Surprisingly rich aroma for a French brune, with raisin and fig like sweetness as well as a more malty (and even roasted) tone. Belgian dubbel like, but not as dry and with a cleanliness that?s odd for such a fruity beer. Even some bubblegum notes. Nice warming taste, not too little alcohol -- this should have some heat to balance the spiced malts. And a good hoppy, albeit classic bite to it too. Very foamy carbonation which I enjoy a lot, countering the alcohol and toast. Only the ending is a bit abrupt and simpler, but I guess it only sets you up for another sip.
