Appearance: Medium sized, light brown, creamy head, mostly lasting, dark brown hue, very hard to see through. Flavor: Amazing! Initial flavor is sweet and rich, finishes with a hint of bitterness, probably from the alcohol, and a sweet nutty flavor. Palate: Average carbonation, creamy texture. Wharfrat (18), USA
| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 20/20 | Feb 17, 2007 750 ML Bottle, poured with a nice head that leaves lace on the glass. Pretty reddish brown color with little bubbles.
The aroma is very impressive, with dark fruits, malts, and alcohol blending nicley.
The flavor mimics the aroma, only better. Complexity and goodness are the words that come to mind. The Belgian yeast has been tamed to avoid the extreme flavors they can produce.
Mouthfeel is nice, with just the right amount of carbonation to balance the viscosity of the beer.
One of my favorite Belgium Brown ales. Bigsilky (322), Charleston, USA
| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Apr 13, 2005 A favorite from a very small, and very talented Belgian brewery. This is exactly what I love aobut their brewing mantra: no rules. Dark brown in color with strong notes of caramel and some dark fruit. The hops give the beer a clean finish and help to hide the 9.5% very well. Head retention is classic and form an intricate lace on the sides of the chalice. If you can find this beer do yourself a favor and pick up a few. blanstuf (16), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

I’ve had 3 bottles in the past few months and I’ve enjoyed each one... thoroughly. It has a decent smell, and an absolutely great taste. I would recommend this to anyone even if you’re not a belgian person. foduck (304), Denton, Texas, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Sep 28, 2003 Distinct pear and apple aroma flooded the room when I uncorked this. Sniffing it close-up it smells woody and the slightest hint of pepper. Dark reddish brown. Flavor is reminiscient of Chimay. The only flaw I find is the alcohol comes through rather unmasked. A little vanilla, wood, fruits with a firm bitterness. I really like this. Life is grand. ChillCoat (1030), Concord, California, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Dec 28, 2005 Bottled. pours a clear mahogany color with a light tan head that fades quickly. What an aroma!! Some dark fruits, a little cinnamon candy, sour, maybe some cherries. Wow! Sweet and thick mouth feel. Prunes, more cinnamon candy, cherries, yeast, toffee and a bit of malt. Sweet aftertaste. Alcohol is almost entirely hidden it only barley jumps in at the finish. This beer is simply fantastic. fata2683 (942), Panama City, Florida, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Nov 20, 2008 bottle, what a gorgeous beer. Pours a nice brown/red with some purple highlights at the bottom of the glass. Head is light beige and 3 fingers high. Aroma is dark malt, roasted expresso bean, and bitter chocolate. Smells like a RIS. I hope it doesn’t dissapoint. It DOES NOT. Tons of flavor, where to start.....some chocolate malt meets sweet crystal. The bitterness is spot-on. There is also some spice, pepper and nutmeg that linger in the finish with the alcohol burn. This is a perfect fireplace beer, but I would want it on many other occasions. When I think of Belgian dark strong ale, this is it! Try it! Cobra (1066), In a van, down by the river, Maryland, USA

One powerful beer here gang. Poured out like a fine brandy, rich, red & highly caramelized. Aromas are of caramelized malts, candi sugar, rich English toffee, and some oak notes as well. This is one of the most complex beers I've ever had, bar none. Alcohol aromas are very prevalent as well. Sherry notes and vinous as well.
Mouthfeel is rich, and mellow. Finishes very smooth, and is a very rich beer overall. I wish I had bought more than one. It would make an excellent beer for New Years.
