Tasted dirty. I didn't even finish the glass which is saying something for me. Maybe I got a bad bottle. I will have to retaste sometime.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A sweet floral/fruity aroma with hints of raisin. Pours a deep, amber orange. Slightly bitter with a trace of saltiness in the finish. Carbonation is lively. The body is medium. Overall, an outstanding example of a Belgian strong ale.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
CO2 is behoorlijk. Afdronk is zoet met een kruidige noot.
Al heel vaak gedronken maar blijft toch prettig.

33cl bottle at home (17 VI 2016), poured in a 25cl leprechaun glass. This is the classic La Chouffe, highly commercialised, since Moortgat’s takeover available in 330 ml bottle. The Chouffe story is well known, as it is one of the first spices enhanced beers, leading to a huge commercial success. Even more after the merge into the Duvel-Moortgat Brewery. Lets have a taste, now. The beer looks splendid, with a massive snow white collar, very frothy, very large. The brew is yellow to orange, light copper coloured with a slightly hazy body. The nose already hints at some black peppers and keen fresh notes, almost apricot fruits. Maybe some mint. It also has a strong abbey tripel feeling, with grainy character and malt backbone. The hoppiness sure is subtle, almost non-existing. The mouthfeel is enjoyable, no doubt about that, but maybe the medium carbonation is a that too soft. Making this brew a bit dull. The black pepper, mint, cinnamon and leaves notes side with the sweet maltness. Fresh! There is some bread in there as well... and some soap too. The ending is fairly short, and lacks a pleasant bitterness. This actually is a smooth drinker, with a hidden eight percent ABV, quite enjoyable but not as momentous or remarkable as I remembered this La Chouffe. I should have this one on draft again (only had it a couple of times), and why not after some bottle aging? I guess the freshness should fade out, adding a stronger body to the ale.

330 ml bottle. Pours amber with a white head. The aroma is rather understated. Lightly yeasty with hints of ripe stone fruits. Medium body with soft to lively carbonation. The flavor is sweet with an alcoholic aftertaste. The taste is moderately malty with some caramel and dried fruits.

On tap. Wonderful faint aroma, delicate lacing, great feel on the tongue. High alcohol content as with many fine Belgian beers. A classic!

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Hazed rich gold color. Big 2 inch white head. Thick white lace. Aroma is Belgian sugar, palate is thick and heavy with cooked sugar. Just too heavy, rich, and full of fluff to enjoy reasonably. Had to re-rate, and add this note because the high ratings for this are absolutely ridiculous and bogus. It’s not pleasantly fruity, there is no corriander, a.k.a. cilantro and the "tinged hops" disappear under all the sugar.
