COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
La Choulette Ambrée is the classic amber version of a French bières de gardes. It has a wonderfully spicy aroma and is fullflavored, but effervescent and refreshing.

I really liked this beer. it’s head is very creamy but not so much that it deadens the aroma. It’s bright and a little sweet. If you like a heavily herbed nose or a traditional American hop this might not be the beer for you. The heavy banana on the nose and the caramel flavor makes it almost a dessert beer, but I wouldn’t go that far. If it were a little higher in alcohol it might have enough contrast. That said, I’m drinking it with strawberries and it’s quite complimentary (not in the glass). I think it plays well with lower acid fruit but might be too similar to cooked sugars, chocolates or caramel to be complimentary. A nutty cheese might also do the trick. I’ll also say that my bottle is about a year past the sell by date but I doubt it’s anywhere near the drink by date. Seems like some age might be helpful.

This french biere de garde is quite spectacular. I enjoyed a bottle that had been aged for 2 years and it was quite a treat. A light yellow hue, it gave off a strong, sweet malt base that refreshed my palate more than any other biere de garde I have had before. A spectacular treat for the hot summer to come!

Bottle 750 ml at home, poured into a tulip glass. ABV 8% Light amber coloured beer, with low activity in it and a tall off-white head. Froathy, disappears rather quickly, leaving a thin line of foam around the glass. Aroma of malts, caramel, some straw, candy sugar, light lemon zest. Quite malty on the taste and very sweet, with more caramel and sugar, but there are some spices in it that give it a nice twist and invite you for one more sip. Medium body with good carbonation on it, and mildly dry palate. Overall this begins a bit disappointing but it changes course once it hit aroma and even more on the taste. Solid one, needs some time and a bigger enough sample I believe.

Pours a dark amber, almost brown colour, with a fluffy head. A rich aroma of spice, dark fruit, coffee. Satisfying taste, lots of malts with a bit of bitterness, but nicely balanced. Pretty good overall.

330 ml bottle. BB 26/12/14. From saveur-biere.com.
My advent calender door number 15 gave me this one. It’s dark mahogany coloured with a big light tan head. Sweet dark fruits, spices and dry maltiness. Very nice. The flavour is also quite yummy with dark fruits, some sweetness, spices, dry woody malt and mild alcohol.

Clear amber brownish appearance with medium head. Malty with some scents of roast and coffee, sweet and slightly bitter, alcohol isn’t too noticeable, slightly odd aftertaste though. Good Biere de Garde style.

75cl bottle. Pours a dark coppery brown with a medium, beige head. Aroma is earthy and malty. A lot of breadiness, a dab of dark fruits, prunes and plums. Somewhat herbal. Taste is semisweet, earthy with a lot of dark malts and breadiness. Dark bread and dark fruits. Prune, apple on the finish. Nettles and black currant on the aftertaste. Spiciness. Soft, smooth and medium. Not much in the way of carbonation. Could be a bit fuller. Finally a French Bière de Garde that has a good character of its own.
