COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
La Choulette Ambrée is the classic amber version of a French bières de gardes. It has a wonderfully spicy aroma and is fullflavored, but effervescent and refreshing.

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2004 Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly lasting. Body is hazy dark amber, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, cookie), moderately yeasty (mold, cobwebs), with notes of peach, grass, sour apple, hint of alcohol. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Sourish, and not entirely wholesome.

Bottle, Smokeless Joe’s. Amber colour, very active, thick white head. Subtle spiciness in aroma, but it didn’t leave an impression. Sharp, carbonated, malt taste with and odd mustiness to it. Tasted slightly strong as well. It seemed a bit odd to me, but became much more drinkable as it warmed. One of those beers that might strike me differently every time I tried it. This time it was just ok.

My review is tainted by a bad cork, which overwhelmed the aroma and flavor of this beer. I detected a nice spicy, peppery aspect, with a sweet, nice body, some earthiness, caramel malt and a bland finish. Amber color, rapidly diminished foamy, tan head. Probably a decent beer, but mine was in poor condition.

[003-20060825] 330mL. Light beet/earth aroma, not much else. Rich red-brown colour, off-white head, lots of floaties and tiny bubbles. Flavour was thick, chocolatey and malty, like a dark molasses or maple syrup. Felt round, a medium rich body, alcohol quite noticeable. Overall a nature-y beer.

33cl bottle. Pours much clearer than I expected. Held up to the light, the color is a gorgeous garnet red. The head was light and frothy but subsides quickly and leaves no lace. Aroma is like brandy and candy sugar but hops and alcohol are detectable too. Mouthfeel is gentle and smooth. Thin body with a clean but predominantly alcoholic finish that reminds me of malt liquor. Either there is not enough substance here for me, or I don’t get the beer. Having said all that, it’s going down alright and it’s 400th rating so--cheers!

clear amber, large smooth offwhite head. Sweet malty, nutty aroma, crisp. flavor is quite smoked or roasted, malty, a little sweet. maize, fruity notes, alc shows clearly when warming up. this reminds me most of a cheap strong beer, but with some interesting comlexity added in, unbalanced.

330 ml bottle from Bieropholie, served cold in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear(?) deep copper with a mice orange-tan head. Aroma: Fairly fruity, some nice brown sugar and caramel, fairly austere cold, as it warms, there are some esters, a touch of spiciness, some berries, never really opens up fully... Palate: Medium body, sparse effervescence. Flav.: Rich malts, rum, spiciness, a bit fruity, a bit of green hops, minerals, a bit of alcohol, not a tremendous complexity; dry with a touch of bitterness and a kinda peppery malt finish.

I expected a bit more depth.

(33 cl bottle from Brødrene D; BBD: Jan 26th 2013) Pours a clear amber with lively carbonation and a medium, white head. Good retention and a little lace. Aroma is yeasty (basement) with bready notes and not much trace of hop. Oily texture, medium body, slightly sweet finish. Taste is mildly sweet with a little bitterness towards the end. Interesting but still confirming to me that biere de garde really isn’t my cup of tea. Girlfriend says: "It’s some kind of spicy."

bottle from saveur-biere. Hazy amber-golden colour, mid-sized off-white head. Slightly fruity with dusty hops, caramel and very shy hints of vegetables.
