COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
La Choulette Ambrée is the classic amber version of a French bières de gardes. It has a wonderfully spicy aroma and is fullflavored, but effervescent and refreshing.

Ok aroma and flavor. Unfortunately it disapears quickly.

As I was drinking this and reading the reviews, I realized that madslangtved's description summed up exactly what I was thinking. So I will take the liberty of using his review: "Not very good. I can't decide what this beer tastes like. It is very confusing. Not very well-balanced."

Musty woody and cork aroma with big whiffs of malt and fruit. Orangy/red with a smallish head. Flavour was all cork, malt, no hops but some sour notes. Maybe this needs to be drunk by itself?

Clear dark brown with a sweet malty aroma. Flavour is sweet and malty with a weird spicyness that I’m not really liking, finishes a bit dry.

The ambers are the best in Nord-Pas de Calais, but this is not the best of them. This one pors a medium bronze-amber with a large, only slightly offwhite head. For a beer that is 8 percent, you’d never believe there was that much alcohol in there --yet the first taste is a bit strong and sticky. The cherry fruitiness of this style is missing in this beer and is replaced by a disconnected yeastiness and a pinch of Belgian malt-salt. That is to say, it never develeps into the beer it should be. At best is it a super-fermented malt-liquor tasting too much like a Belgian blonde.

LIked the blonde more. Not much aroma and an odd taste that sticks to the gums in a bad way. Okay, but nothing wonderful.

So I’m getting the feeling that when talking about biere de gardes, "ambree" means the darker, nuttier kind, as opposed to 3 Monts, which is completely different from this (and Jenlain Ambree). So yes, darker brown with a red tinge, semi-sweet aroma, raisin-like. Nutty flavor that definitely did not agree with my stomach. Can’t point to exactly what doesn’t work for me, and at $9/350ml I was forcing myself to finish it; wish I could like this more...

Pours a dark amber color with lighter red hues when held to a light source and a thin foamy yellowish head that quickly fades leaving no lacing. Very subtle light fruit aroma with hints of earthy hops, spice and faint hops. Very bland and uninteresting. Fuller bodied with much more of a malt presence than expected. Slightly spicy with citrus and dark fruits. Medium carbonation which helps the mouthfeel. Alcohol not well masked. Average at best.

75 cl bottle; Dark copper with white head that collapses fairly fast. Nose is sweet malt and a hint of chewinggum. Flavor is sweet and spicy with a strange dusty taste... maybe this beer has been mistreated by the shop?? Mouthfeel is heavily carbonated and allright for style.

Clear amber colour with thick off white head. Mild malt nose with slight toasted hints. Sweet malt taste with lingering sweet finish.
