La Choulette Ambrée is the classic amber version of a French bières de gardes. It has a wonderfully spicy aroma and is fullflavored, but effervescent and refreshing.

A nice light brown/red colour with a small head. Quite sparkling with a discreet salty flavour at the beginning, it flows easily in the mouth. Some strong malt and grapes aromas. A very good bear I would drink along bread with a sweet spread on it, possibly with peanuts or pork with a sweet sauce.

75cl bottle brought back from France. Nice dark amber appearance in the glass and enjoyed the complex flavours esp as it warmed slightly while drinking. Unfortunately my wife also loved it so I had to share the bottle!

From a caged corked 750 ml. bottle with a date I’m sure what it means, the unnotched date on the bottom of label with 14.10.06 stamped above it, a blurb on the back label, sampled at cellar temperature in a chalice. Poured a cloudy nice looking amber with a foamy, bubbly topped white head that settled into a thin bubbly, sudsy lacing. Aromas of musty, earthy bread, clove and spices, nutty, cocoa, caramel and a subtle raisin fruitiness that meshes with the alcohol. Good carbonation and a crisp, dry, velvety smooth medium-light bodied mouthfeel. A good Biere de Garde taste, musty, earthy spicy bread, caramel toffee with a hint of cocoa, clove and nutty, a light peppery, a subtle raisin fruitiness, the alcohol meshes with fruitiness and provides a soft warmth in the palate, and a dry musty, malty finish. A delicious French ale, despite the 8% ABV, an easy, smooth drinkability, well worth trying.

750ml bottle (One Pint, Helsinki, Belgian Beer Weeks 2007). For all the malt-lovers out there. Rich ruddy brown colour, and a taste to match. Sweet caramel malts are dominant, but with enough nuttiness and spiciness to make it quite interesting and not 1-dimensional. Did I mention huge amounts of malt?

750ml - Aroma is nutty caramel malts with a little dark fruit and mellow earthy hops. Pours muddy brown with a big head and great lacing. Flavor matches aroma with some spice tossed in. Palate is smooth and creamy with just a touch of tartness. A very nice BdG.

Bottle: Poured a hazy brown color ale with a large frothy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of bready yeast with fruity ester is quite nice. Taste is also dominated by a huge semidry caramel malt base with nice yeast ester of fresh bread and light fruit. Body is quite full with limited filtration and good bottle conditioning with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Much better then expected and a nice example of how good the French bière de garde can be.

Pours a dark amber, almost brown colour, with a fluffy head. A rich aroma of spice, dark fruit, coffee. Satisfying taste, lots of malts with a bit of bitterness, but nicely balanced. Pretty good overall.
