COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Stronger, fuller flavored version of the classic bière de garde. The New York Times (your Paper of Record) just anointed this beer the ultimate bière de garde, and rightly so. It’s a rich, rare treat from one of France’s old guard craft breweries. Be there or be square.

[975-20071215] 1pt9.4floz (Holiday Tasting 2007 @ Cole’s, Buffalo, NY). Strange boozy grass yeast malt aroma has a bit of fresh plant leaf. Clear, amber orange body with a medium-lasting creamy off-white head. Sweet boozy malt grain flavour has a hint of paint can. Boozy medium body. Awesome with Buffalo chicken wings.

Bottle@Home. Prune, raisin and wine-like aroma. Brown color, beige head, good lace. Light sweet, malty, well hopped, soft bitterness, raisin. Easy drinkable, flavorful, bit German character.

750 ml bottle aged about a year after purchase.

Pours relatively dark red-brown with a very modest head. Lovely, lovely nose: complex with hops, wood, vanilla, spices. Flavor doesn’t quite match up, it comes on a bit too heavy on a cinnamon (and other winter spices) and a bit too sweet, but nonetheless is quite nice and again, as with the aroma, is extremely complex. Mouthfeel is beautiful for sipping, not the least bit hot or heavy but entirely full.

As many of the reviewers have noted, this is a very interesting, very good beer that somehow fall just short of greatness.

Pours a translucent golden amber with a medium creamy off white head that left some lacing. Aroma of some dark fruits, caramel, various spices, sweet maltiness, light alcohol. Flavor of malty sweetness, some wheat, caramel, dark fruits, spices, yeast

Clear amber color with a creamy pillowy head. Aroma of yeast, fruit and spice. Flavor of honey and bread but a slight metallic taste in the front. Dry, clean finish. Quite enjoyable.

Bottle @ Cole’s Christmas Tasting 2007. Copper body with a fast fading white head. Sweet aroma, light yeast and very light notes of fruit and spice. Similar flavour, light overall profile, mild fruit and spices echo the aroma. (6+) Average palate. Not unpleasant but fails to inspire.

Pours a translucent tan-copper with many small bubbles. Biscuit and bread in the nose. Honey, butterscotch, caramel and cinnamon in the flavor. The butterscotch is what makes this so good. Sparkling and crisp palate. Easy drinking and a fabulous taste.

Ruby color, thick, frothy white head. Cinnamon aroma, maybe cranberries too. Flavor of cinnamon, malt and alcohol. Light to medium body, liquorous texture. It’s good but I thought this was a belgian beer

hazy dark amber, sweet malty aroma, bitter malt flavor, touch of spices, either too simple or too pallet fatigue

Bottle: Dark maroon body with a thin layer of head. Very fruity aroma with lots of alcohol. Maple/molasses very present as well. Nice. Sugarcane sweetness, with some grape qualities. Maple flavors show up. Black current flavors show up as well. Lots of fruits, and just enough hops to balance it out. Not bad...
