I was very impressed with this one. Deep orange color with a lasting tan head. Cinimon and spice aroma that is not overwhelming and at perfect levels for a beer. Full bodied beer with gentle spice notes throughout the carmel malt flavor. Nice balance and very drinkable. Worth a second bottle.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 ml bottle [corked and caged]: Deep garnet with a fluffy white head. Wonderful green apples and ripe pears sing out of the glass. Airy malt and tasty yeast. Buttery rum flavours along with luscious fruit, light herbal spices and more yeast. Not as “winey” as some other Bière de Gardes I have had, which I really like. This is a full flavoured: cocoa, figs, raisins, honey, simply elegant.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cherry hued straw beneath a thin, off-white. Tons of light malt with a bit of subtle spice. Oranges, toffee, cinnamon, lemon zest, white pepper and some oily nuts. Light, crisp and refreshing body with a clean finish. The flavor is pleasant and not overbearing, as I feared this holiday beer might do. The subtleness is key to a nice Biere de Garde and I'm glad this didn't disappointed. Well done.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750ml bottle on sale for $10. I was not sure what to expect from this beer but I was a little surprised how much I enjoyed it. It was a dark amber color with a good head. The smell was spicy and dusty, not bad. The taste was spices, dust almost like a dark saison but also made me think of Christmas spices which could be the power of suggestion at work. Overall I thought this was a good beer but I would not revisit it. I will however purchase their framboise next.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. A bit dark for a bier de garde, the style that just came out of nowhere on ratebeer sometime last year. It goes surprisingly well with the environmentally irresponsible half pound of beef that I am consuming with it. Thick, complex malty aroma with hints of fruit, and some holiday type spices. Sweet in the finish. The mouthfeel could be a little bit stronger, but otherwise this is an excellent beer!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JAN 10, 2009 750ml - best before March 2004 - Aroma is sweet carmel and toffee with a touch of spice. Pours dark brown with a nice lasting medium head and great lacing. Flavor is a bit stale and metallic. The aftertaste matches aroma with some dark fruit thrown in. Palate is sticky. The thing about it is I haven’t had a fresh one to tell if it’s age or just the biere de garde funkiness. Even 2 years past the ’best by date’ it is drinkable and good, but not great. I may have to re-visit next Christmas.
Re-rate - had lots of caramel and some dark fruits. Much fresher this time and quite tasty.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 ml caged and corked bottle. Served in a tulip, the beer pours a slightly hazy amber color with about an inch light tan head. Head retention is good, and there’s a lot of lacing. Aroma is mostly malty, it smells like dark fruit (raisins), toffee, caramel, apples and some sweet spices. Taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like dark fruit (raisins, plums), apples, caramel, bready malt, brown sugar, and some cinnamon. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it’s a bit coating and has a good amount of carbonation. I liked this, and I think it’s worth a try if you come across it.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Yeasty and cakey in the flavor. Chewy, and altogether quite well-balanced and enjoyable. Not too sweet at all, which is refreshing. A nice mild dryness to it. Strong yeasty aroma with the essence of Xmas candy.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
I was expecting something spiced, but was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't. Deep brown color, nice loose tan head. (Frothy). Flavor is intense and woody. Somewhat sweet on the tail end, but not sickening.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Appearance: suspiciously watery brownish pour slowly darkening to a deep red with tons of icky floaties; bottle was a gusher, with a huge off-white head. Aroma: Weak--notes of caramel, basement funk, yeast, hint of melon, and spices. Taste: bready, spicy, with more watery fruit notes (melon, some fig/raisin). Finish: relatively short, clean, with lingering notes of malt and bread. Notes: I don’t see what the fuss is about. Terribly average-seeming. Palate was nice and the alcohol well-hidden. Bottle aged over a year, but best before 9/2012. For a second glass, I had a couple of chocolate chip cookies beforehand, and the residual flavors were an excellent complement. Bottle from the Rare Beer Club.
