COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Stronger, fuller flavored version of the classic bière de garde. The New York Times (your Paper of Record) just anointed this beer the ultimate bière de garde, and rightly so. It’s a rich, rare treat from one of France’s old guard craft breweries. Be there or be square.

Bottle. [thank you, Yespr]
Pours a light orange with a pretty, creamy off-white head. Aroma is sweet, caramel and lightly fruity. A little thin mouthfeel perhaps. Flavour is nice, lightly vinious and some malty sweetness. There are notes of tartness as well balncing nicely with the sweet graininess.

Bottled. Amber with a short-lived head; aroma of red berry, wet metal railings and dried pear; quite frothy, some pleasant orchard fruit but then a tinny tang with a hint of the wrong kind of funk. Could have used a more refined use of Christmas spices

rauchbier (3593) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - NOV 11, 2012
Vintage bottle, BBE May 2000. Hazy red brown, minimal head and condition. Big woody phenolic oxidised nose with hint of figs, sweet malt and fruit and a touch of mouldiness. Soft and earthy in the mouth with touches of yeastiness and fruity figs, quite woody and peppery and obviously oxidised, lingering earthy bitterness, fruit and oak notes in the finish. Obviously a beer that will keep in bottle but maybe only for a few years.

From a corked 750ml bottle. Pours a cloudy light brown haze, with a foamy white head. Aroma was not there so much. Picked up some toasted bread and alcohol. Taste was slightly better with some sweetness coming thru. Not much flavor on this beer. Would not purchase again.

From a 25cL bottle. Deep malt aroma, sweet with raisin, caramel, brown sugar, orange peel, and spice. Dark caramel brown clear, with foamy off-white lacing head. Medium-heavy watery body with mild carbonation. Starts sweet, with rich malts and some raisin and brown sugar. Kind of watery. Mild dryness of hops toward the finish, and some alcohol warming. Mild acidity to finish, carbonic, with sweet-bitter-dry after, lightly chalky. Sweetness is a bit fake and watery.

Pours very flat, have to pour it very hard to get any foam. Nose of sweet fruits, slight oxidation, cherry, toasted wallnut. Very rich malt flavor, doesn’t taste cloying, but lacks balance. Lots of dark fruit flavors. I wish this had more carbonation to bring more life into this beer. Tastes flat and sweet with a lack of spice.
