Our smoked porter starts with the finest british pale malts and blends in a balanced smokiness with the traditional Rauch Malt of Bamberg Germany. Back that up with restrained cocoa and coffee notes from chocolate and balck patent malts and you have a recipe for an absolutely sublime deep brown/black ale. Smoke, chocolate, caramel, burnt toast... take a growler home for weekend brunch...mmmm!

On draft at the brewpub in Albuquerque. Pours black with a tan head. Light smoky nose. More intense smoky flavor of peat with a hint of coffees and chocolate. Bitter finish.

A vigorous pour from the growler produces almost a finger of lightly browned, dark tan colored froth. The beer is a concentrated, somewhat dirty brown color that shows some clear’ish brown hues when held up to the light. The nose is a nice mix of cocoa, toasted brown whole grain bread, touches of sweet dark malt, and a light smokiness. The malt mix hear has an earthy, almost dusty bent to it, but really this is the dark malt character.

Lightly sweet, yet it has a richness to it, the smokiness kicks in towards the middle were it is rounded and savory, but it is in the finish where it really kicks in and brings a smoky, almost briny character to this beer. The up front malt character accentuates notes of cocoa, some dark chocolate, perhaps some roasted coffee character, and definitely an amply toasted, dark brown, whole grain bread character that helps to contribute to the malt complexity found here. Touches of smoked raisins, or perhaps even some fig notes add a little something to the smoke and roasted grain character. The body of this beer is fairly chewy, I wouldn’t quite call it rich, but this is definitely a sipping beer. There is a touch of chalky character in the finish and the roast character also gets a touch acrid, and there is also a touch of burnt bitterness to this beer.

The smokiness is much more prominent in the flavor than it is in the aroma. This is definitely a tasty beer, it could use a touch more smoky richness to my palate, and doesn’t quite have the richness and smoky complexity that Alaskan Smoked Porter can have when it is firing on all cylinders, but it is quite tasty none-the-less, and a beer to try for those that like smoked brews.

Tap at La Cumbre. Great lacing on clear dark cola red. Webby tan lacing. Not very smoked on nose or taste, but is somewhat savory. Body brings more tootsie roll and milk chocolate. Solid but the smoke could be a lot more assertive.

on tap at La Cumbre. Murky black with a small creamy light brown head. Good lacing throughout my mug. Aroma is heavily malty, with strong notes of chocolate, coffee, and smokiness. Full bodied with sticky mouthfeel, softly carbonated. Long duration of flavor with a lingering smokiness and coffee flavor in the finish. Very, very rich and very enjoyable. This is a masterpiece.
