Our Second iteration of this classic American Pale Ale pairs 2 hops that define American hop aroma. Centennial, often referred to as “Super Cascade” has been a darling of the craft brewing industry for nearly 2 decades. Many breweries make single hopped pale ales and IPAs with this hop due to its consistent quality and classic pine and grapefruit aromatics. Available starting in 2004, no hop has defined “New School” hop aroma like Simcoe has. Definitively catty with tropical, and intense pine, this hop has become the poster child for everything we love in our hop bombs in this country. These two combine perfectly to create a simple pale ale that offers a little extra in both aroma and flavor.

UPDATED: NOV 16, 2013 On tap at La Cumbre. The aroma jumps outta the glass - citrus and tropical notes mixed with a hint of dankness - stunning really - up there with the best IPAs and at the top of my APA list. The taste is medium bitter, beautifully balanced with sweet malt. Medium mouthfeel with some lingering, pleasant stickiness. Overall, my favorite pale by a good bit - the balance makes it soooo drinkable.

On tap at pub. Pours out a crisp light pale topped with a white head. Nose is lots of grain light hops and some spice. Taste is as the nose with a nice mellow tropical fruit hop and some sweetness off the malts.

Tap at the brewery. Pours a deep yellow with a thick lasting head. Pine aroma with something a bit musty that i like. This is a damn fine hop forward beer without driving off the non hop head like me. The minor citrus is a compliment to the grapefruit with a nice sweet melon like malt flavor that keeps this easy to drink while keeping my taste buds on their toes. Next time i’m in town a growler of this will likely head north with me.

Tap@Brewery: Pours light copper with singing nose of pine and bread. On the palate, its structure is a tightly wound coil: mostly pine. Taste of bread, spruce and herbs. Overall, a real C-hop celebration.

Up front the beer has a nice citrusy hop character, but then gets more earthy with a toasted, caramel malt character, and some herbal / pine notes, a woody herbal note, and as the beer warms up more hop fruitiness. There is a supporting, toasted straw, pale malt cracker here in the nose as well.

Light bodied, and crisp, the beer has a really juicy hop flavor to it that has lots of tangelo zest notes, guava notes, and even some lychee, and lots of floral peach notes that come out more if you haven’t taken a sip recently. The malt character play s a clearly supporting malt character with touches of caramelized malt that more accentuates the fruit than is actually noticeable, a thing of nuttiness, and a very smooth, light bitterness.

Definitely a quite tasty beer, unlike many a brew, the flavor has more of a juicy hop-fruit character than the nose somehow. Really nicely done.
