3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 SSKD814 (854) - Pennsylvania, USA - APR 26, 2010
A- Body is a very cloudy translucent straw yellow. Pours with a foamy 1-2 finger white head. Head eventually fades to a thin collar and leaves some traces of lacing behind in the glass. Cloudiness is thick and somewhat dynamic with a hint of brown yeast sediment lurking in the bottom of the glass.
S- Smell is light and fruity. Lemon and orange citrus scents are the highlight with a hint of coriander and a bready yeast in the background.
T- The flavor is like the smell but much more subdued. The overall impression is sweet with sweet citrus upfront and a low but noticeable yeasty backbone. A hint of coriander comes through for the finish along with an even more subtle hint of floral hop flavor and bitterness. The finish is otherwise pretty clean with nothing lingering on the palate.
P- Low to medium tingly carbonation. Mouthfeel is very light and has a bit of a yeast presence but is thinner than I like for the style.
O- This is a pretty good witbier. The 7.5% is very well hidden especially considering the thin mouthfeel. There is no noticeable presence of alcohol presence whatsoever and this drinks like a 3-4% session beer. Not my favorite of the style but still one I would have again.

Cloudy burnt orange with an egg-shell white head that left very nice lacing. Aromas of mildly spicy yeast, coriander and black pepper. Tartness of green apples plays against the sweetness of toasted malts on the tongue. Smooth creamy mouthfeel, gentle but lively carbonation, and a sweetish finish.

750ml From Whole Foods. Cloudy and golden with an initially thick white head that settles down to a thin head covering the top with light lacing. Aromas hint of lemon, citrus, yeast and wood. Creamy satisfying body with medium carbonation. Light bitterness in the flavor which is somewhat bland. Overall an ok brew with seemingly quality ingredients just not at the top of the style.

Pretty good. Huge head but light carbonation. Yeasty and fruity flavor that is lightly sweet. Needed some more spice to live up to the "imperial name". Less spicy than some other wits out there. Very smooth and drinkable, no taste of alcohol.

Bottle. Nose is lime, mandarin, and lightly roasted grain; there’s also a slight floral undertone. Pours a hazy gold with a white, lacey head. Surprisingly sweet, with light phenols and more citrus. Finish is long and a touch murky. Good, but nothing special.

This was the first in a series of beers for my second and most recent outing to Denver’s premier watering hole, Falling Rock Tavern. I chose the DeProef La Grande Blanche as a starting brew solely on it’s name, hoping a Blanche, or white-ish beer might be a good starter. Indeed, this beer is on the delicate side, a femme brew, leaving murkier favors for later in the drinking session. The Grande Blanche’s color is maybe less grand than Grande, but it is still a clear, white grape juice color, maybe like a white wine. The head is a mottled aspen white with a firm lacing. Despite this well webbed top, the aroma comes punching through, pleasant and dense. The smell of sweet white grapes, almost hoary in its refreshing coolness approaches a sugar content near high fructose corn syrup with a taming grain touch. The smell, if dense, is still challenging to read; I find myself struggling to jot any other flavors down besides "sweet and lightly grainy." The taste is comparatively muted, or rather, normal. A light dripping of honey, well weighted palate and refreshing character make this a simple taste, but a pleasant one. Perhaps the Grande Blanche would make a better accompaniment to food than as company to nothing, as the simplified flavors are strong enough to pair with fairer dishes. The second tasting of this beer, which came many months after the first, introduced a much more bitter beer, with a sneaking sourness and a slight touch of sour cherries in the aroma. Otherwise, it is as simple and nice as it was the first time.

750 mL bottle. Pours hazy yellow with a medium, white head. The aroma is vanilla, corn, and mild cheese. The flavor is sweet and funky. The palate is medium, sticky and syrupy. Overall, this is a cloyingly sweet and yeasty beer, but it lacks the citrus aroma that makes a good witbier. Fair.

Bottle from Total Wine. Pours a solid inch of white head over a golden body. The nose is subtle with hints of wheat and yeast. Flavors continue with more wheat, hints of lemon and citrus. A crisp finish rounds out the medium body and medium/full carbonation. The higher ABV is slightly apparent for the style. Not bad.
