COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
La Moneuse is named for A. J. Moneuse (b. 1768), a famous local bandit and gang leader, and ancestor of the brewers' family. It is a classic "saison" beer by virtue of its strength and its earthy, aged quality. It has a hardy, semi-dry malt character, a fresh but not overpowering hoppiness, abundant yeasty, fruity flavors and a fairly strong, but pleasant and enticing mustiness.

Bottle shared at the Pizza Port Bottle Shop. Very interesting saison. Hazy golden color with a huge skunky aroma that smells a lot like a danky satchel of weed. Very spicy taste with a slightly musty and grassy finish. Almost has a winter spice character mixed with the toasted bread and Belgian yeast notes. Very enjoyable.

Opaquely gold with a lasting white head. Loads of yeasty white sediment, and various foreign bodies floating in the froth. Vegetal aroma soon dissipated to leave sweet butterscotch. Sweet taste, which you think is going to turn out sour but doesn’t, if you get my drift. A hint of dryness. Very good.

UPDATED: MAR 15, 2009 Bottle. Poured a lightly hazy orange-copper color with a thick, rocky off-white head that stuck around quite nicely. Aroma of some tart yeastiness with nice fruit undertones of orange, lemon, and a touch of light berry, some soft spiciness, and a light dose of floral hops. Lightly musty, dry, yeasty entry with some earthy undertones and moderate spiciness transitions into a bright fruitiness with some orange, grapefruit, some berry, all finishing with a moderately tart, drying yeast finish. Very nice saison. Judging by the sediment in the bottle this may have been a bit older, I will have to buy another and compare.

750 ml bottle, corked and caged, from John’s Marketplace in Portland, OR. Loud bang, followed by cork hitting ceiling violently. Have not found the wire yet. Hazy orange gold color with a huge, foamy white head. The aroma is lightly spicy, lightly fruity, lightly sweat sox. Medium plus body with frothy, creamy carbonation. The flavor is vanilla, yeast, citrus, light stone fruit, and a light funk. It’s very smooth, very integrated, and very flavorful. It is so smooth compared to many saisons. It is deserving of the high ratings it has received.

750 ml bottle poured into large snifter. Wow! This brew pours on the largest head of any brew I’ve had so far. I had to wait awhile to let it settle before I could drink it. It was pretty as a picture in the glass. A deep amber/orange with a light amber colored head. Crisp and dry with a strong hop presence that gives way to a mild malt aftertaste. A very well balanced brew. Surprisingly the alcohol is very subdued in it the smell and taste, but man this brew packs a wallop! An excellent Saison.
