COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
La Socarrada is a "gastro-ale," or food-pairing golden ale made with only, water, malts (pils/amber), hops, yeast, rosemary, and rosemary honey. La Socarrada pours a beautiful golden-amber color with a light, white, non-persistant head. The nose is wonderfully appetizing, filled with rosemary, rosemary-honey, and a light bread-like quality. The taste is full of rosemary, rosemary honey, and fruity characteristics along the lines of pear, apple, and fig. There is also a distinct gingery bite as well as a light note of black pepper. The body is both crisp and pleasantly dry. It is recommended to be served around 45į in a white wine glass or snifter.

Itís a big boy: 75cl and 6% and comes in a stylish, minimalist design with just a gold label attached to give any clues to its contents. Full marks for design, then. It poured a hazy amber with good carbonation and a healthy white froth on top. The aroma was promising; a little herbal with ginger spice and some rosemary. The beer was medium-bodied and hid the strength well. Initially it seemed herbal in nature, rather sweet followed by a pepperiness. However, the rosemary soon takes hold, followed by another wave of rosemary and then more rosemary. There is something of a bittering finish, but itís quickly replaced with, yes you guessed it, rosemary. This beer can be summed up in one word: ROSEMARY. I like rosemary but here it completely overwhelms the malt and everything else. This is definitely a specialist beer. Interesting, yes, but although it may be a good match for pork dishes or something of a similar nature, itís just too much on its own.

Pours hazy dark golden color with white head. Aromas of rosemary and pilsner malts with some yeast. Similar flavors with slight pepperiness. Medium body with lively carbonation.

Bottle, 33 cl, at Bryggens ōlbar.Clear golden with a decent white head and some nice lacings. Intense herbal nose with strong notes of rosemary and honey. As the australian bartender said: It has a nose reminding of the filling of a stuffed turkey! The flavor very much follows the nose with sweet notes of fruit, yeast, floral hops and bready malts. Medium bitter. Interesting, but a tad to sweet, especially in the finish.

Light amber color out of the cute little champagne bottle with a fizzy off white head. Nose of honey and rosemary. I get a medicinal sense out of this which interferes with my enjoyment a little. Rosemary flavors with some soap, honey, and spice. Sort of like a rosemary scone. Too much carbonation on the tongue. Interesting beer....

On tap. Pours with a clear golden hued body with a mostly retentive white head. Aromas are sweet, fruity, estery. Rosemary, grapefruit and ginger. Medium alcohol, mildly acidic. Flavors are spicy and sweet with strong rosemary. Off dry finish, lightly spicy, some alcohol flavor noticeable for the low-ish abv. Lively bubbles, medium-low bodied.

bottle-conditioned 330ml. lightly hazed amber body with a very thin white head and little retention. heavy ginger and star anise / licorice nose with minimal malt or hop expression and only a light doughy yeastiness. medium body, medium sweetness, low bitterness, medium to medium-high acid. very much like ginger ale in the flavor, and if it werenít for the barely-noticeable alcohol and round, chewy body, I would guess blind that this is soda. itís effervescent, sweet and spicy with no noticeable hop flavor but some bitterness. Iím really surprised to see no ginger in this beer at all, but I can see how the rosemary gives a similarly spice / root / bitter vegetable leaf (bay leaves?) flavor. canít say itís something I enjoy that much, but itís made rather well, no noticeable flaws. a little too sweet for my liking, and unidimensional ginger (i mean rosemary) flavor throughout.
