COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
La Socarrada is a "gastro-ale," or food-pairing golden ale made with only, water, malts (pils/amber), hops, yeast, rosemary, and rosemary honey. La Socarrada pours a beautiful golden-amber color with a light, white, non-persistant head. The nose is wonderfully appetizing, filled with rosemary, rosemary-honey, and a light bread-like quality. The taste is full of rosemary, rosemary honey, and fruity characteristics along the lines of pear, apple, and fig. There is also a distinct gingery bite as well as a light note of black pepper. The body is both crisp and pleasantly dry. It is recommended to be served around 45° in a white wine glass or snifter.

Bottled. Golden colour, not much head. Aroma is honey, mild spices, some malts as well as some slight floral notes. Flavour is fruits, wood, honey, some spices and mild gingery notes. Good effort, but not my thing.

330ml bottle (Alko Arkadia, Helsinki)
Nice herbal aroma, a little savoury and a bit leathery, but gently sweet too - nice. Smooth palate, gentle carbonation. Hayey palate, but smooth and sweet primarily. Kinda fake fruitiness in the finish. Very clear rosemary, but a little sweet. Very floral late finish. Gentle hops pop their head up occasionally too, the late finish has quite a tingly bitter finish. A curious beer that pulls in several different directions, and isn’t well integrated. Maybe it could do with a bit more ageing.

On tap. Pours with a clear golden hued body with a mostly retentive white head. Aromas are sweet, fruity, estery. Rosemary, grapefruit and ginger. Medium alcohol, mildly acidic. Flavors are spicy and sweet with strong rosemary. Off dry finish, lightly spicy, some alcohol flavor noticeable for the low-ish abv. Lively bubbles, medium-low bodied.

bottle-conditioned 330ml. lightly hazed amber body with a very thin white head and little retention. heavy ginger and star anise / licorice nose with minimal malt or hop expression and only a light doughy yeastiness. medium body, medium sweetness, low bitterness, medium to medium-high acid. very much like ginger ale in the flavor, and if it weren’t for the barely-noticeable alcohol and round, chewy body, I would guess blind that this is soda. it’s effervescent, sweet and spicy with no noticeable hop flavor but some bitterness. I’m really surprised to see no ginger in this beer at all, but I can see how the rosemary gives a similarly spice / root / bitter vegetable leaf (bay leaves?) flavor. can’t say it’s something I enjoy that much, but it’s made rather well, no noticeable flaws. a little too sweet for my liking, and unidimensional ginger (i mean rosemary) flavor throughout.

Bottled. Strange aroma. Over ripe fruit and honey, some sourness. The flavour is quite similar - sourness and honey combined. A bit medical. Ginger?
