COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
La Socarrada is a "gastro-ale," or food-pairing golden ale made with only, water, malts (pils/amber), hops, yeast, rosemary, and rosemary honey. La Socarrada pours a beautiful golden-amber color with a light, white, non-persistant head. The nose is wonderfully appetizing, filled with rosemary, rosemary-honey, and a light bread-like quality. The taste is full of rosemary, rosemary honey, and fruity characteristics along the lines of pear, apple, and fig. There is also a distinct gingery bite as well as a light note of black pepper. The body is both crisp and pleasantly dry. It is recommended to be served around 45° in a white wine glass or snifter.

Appearance: Nice golden/amber color and light white head. Aroma: Incredibly appetizing. Honey and rosemary come through distinctly. Taste/Palate: Rosemary, honey, pear/apple, ginger. Body is light, crisp, and surprisingly dry considering the expectation of honey. Very well balanced beer. Overall: Tremendous food pairing beer. I’ve drank this beer with many different meals (manchego cheese, pork tenderloin, venison burger, grilled-and-marinated-with-this-beer chicken, pizza, Pho...). I would like the body to be a bit more attenuated, but keep the carbonation. Not sure how well that could be accomplished. I really think its one of the more unique beers on the market and is incredibly well done.

bottle-conditioned 330ml. lightly hazed amber body with a very thin white head and little retention. heavy ginger and star anise / licorice nose with minimal malt or hop expression and only a light doughy yeastiness. medium body, medium sweetness, low bitterness, medium to medium-high acid. very much like ginger ale in the flavor, and if it weren’t for the barely-noticeable alcohol and round, chewy body, I would guess blind that this is soda. it’s effervescent, sweet and spicy with no noticeable hop flavor but some bitterness. I’m really surprised to see no ginger in this beer at all, but I can see how the rosemary gives a similarly spice / root / bitter vegetable leaf (bay leaves?) flavor. can’t say it’s something I enjoy that much, but it’s made rather well, no noticeable flaws. a little too sweet for my liking, and unidimensional ginger (i mean rosemary) flavor throughout.

Pretty gold with a little lacing. Nose started out as rosemary with some greeneness and honey then got a bit stinky. Drinks almost like an IPA with the honey rounding out the mouthfeel then black pepper spiceyness and some rosemary then a honey sweetness and more black pepper. Quite interesting and much better than what it’s rated.

33 cl, bottle. Copper color; head size is average; creamy and quite long lasting; diminishes into a compact and wide film. aroma is a punch of rosemary and honey. body is alcoholic, oily mouthfeel, low carbonation. The rosemary taste seemed too overwhelming to me. Not very well balanced.

Bottle. Pours cloudy golden with a big creamy off-white head. Aroma of herbal honey. Taste is light sweet red ripe fruits, some sugars and honey, lacks a bit in the hop division, unbalanced and sweet, still interesting.

The rosemary here is just more pleasant on the nose than the palate. Smells like a rosemary forest. But upon drinking, one soon discovers the rosemary is truly alone. No interest from the yeast, no backing from malt, and no balance from hops. Really an interesting beer, and I am not sorry to have tried it, but it just doesn’t have the complexity that would have made it great.

UPDATED: APR 20, 2013 Bottled. An unclear dark golden beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of honey, malt, and roswmary. The flavor is sweet with notes of spices, malt, honey, rosemary, and flavors, leading to a dry finish.

0.33 l bottle from Alko (Arkadia). Copper color. Aromas of piney rosemary and caramel. Sweet taste is dominated by earthy and piney rosemary with some resiny and gingery notes. Rounded full body. Completely overpowered by rosemary and tastes more like a fizzy herbal tonic.

Medium gold pour, decent head. Nose is light rosemary, herbs, and malt. Sweet on the tongue. Middle is the interesting part; woody, honey coated, rosemary flowers. Finish is lightly bitter and long. Not for everyday, but this beer could grow on you.
