COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

A clear dark brown porter with a thin moka head. In aroma, a nitty chocolate with light nutella, smooth and nice. In mouth, a smooth chocolate, herbal notes, lingering bitterness, quite good. On tap at brewpub August 9 2011.

In short: A typical, roasted, semi-sweet and non-fruity porter/stout. Pleasant beer
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Very dark mahogany body with red highlights, very small beige head
In long: Nose is roasted, slightly chocolaty, a bit of coffee and with a tiny bit of smoke. Taste is a little sweeter than expected, plenty of caramelized malts, medium roastiness, brownies cake, burnt wood, roasted coffee beans, high % cocoa black chocolate bar, burnt brown sugar. Basically it is pretty much the standard array of flavors you can expect from a non-fruity porter. A bit more residual sugars than I usually like in a low-abv porter/stout but it fits with the rest of the beer. Quite enjoyable although not something I would session because of the residual sugars. Named 1814 because supposedly something very important happened in Quebec in 1814, not too sure what it is. The creation of the first poutine maybe? Maybe not. And don’t call me ignorant, this is impolite, I am “factually challenged”.

Pint at the brewpub. Nice almost black pour, creamy tan head. Aroma is roasty, not overly so, lightly nutty with a chocolaty background. Taste is slightly bitter, roast grain, some chocolate vanilla too. Palate is nice and creamy, this beer is very filling if that is what you are looking for. Very well made once again.

My Bottom Line :
Roasted chicory allusions roam within this dry-ish Porter, as light leafy hops and their bitterness build a balanced pint.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A veil of foam manages to lace around the brown-hued blackness.
-A touch of fennel seeps from the union of malty sweetness and herbal hops.
-Coffee/chicory flavors are enduring.
-There are few residual sugars here. This is a Porter for those who like to focus on roasted cereal flavors, and a highly drinkable one at that.

On tap at the brewpub.
