3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 JulienHuxley (1154) - Trois-Rivieres, - JAN 24, 2012
On tap at the brewpub. Nice copper brown color with white head. Aroma is very potent, full of rich roasted grain and german hops, quite explosive. Taste leaves your mouth watering for another gulp from your glass of liquid toast, the bitter finish and sharp carbonation contributing largely to that effect. Certainly a surprising beer, and for the best. I can’t say how much of a new-world twist this brewer puts on his traditional german styles, but they come out marvelous.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Quevillon (2014) - Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 29, 2011
Drank on tap (12 oz) at the brewpub, on May 26, 2011. Honey amber, thin head. Aroma of raw malted barley, notes of smoke peas. Pronounced taste of smoked peas, a little malty, bitter pea aftertaste. Not as malty as the others I drank in this style!
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 25, 2011
My Bottom Line:
Toasted malts evolve into a nearly dry finish after leafy, herbal hops had balanced out this quenching Altbier.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the reddish copper.
-The only other brewpub in Quebec that does an excellent Kölsch and Altbier duo is Dieu du Ciel. Kudos to La Succursale!
-I love it when the toasted malt signature is subtle yet lengthy.
-The soft fluff of carbonation makes this extremely drinkable.
-Light fruit allusions rise once in a while.
-This is not one of those caramel-laden North American attempts at the style. Bravo!
On tap at the brewpub.
