(Bottle) Dark brown colour with ruby hints. Huge, but brief, pale brown head, leaving traces of lacing. Herbal, fruity nose with notes of caramel, brown sugar, bitter orange marmalade, prunes and faint hints of fresh coriander. Malty, slightly yeasty taste with dark fruit, caramel, burnt sugar, herbs and a rather bitter, slightly burnt finish. Starts with some malt sweetness but finishes rather dry and bitter. Nice mouthfeel, firm but smooth, slightly vinous. Well constructed and balanced, but actually lacking that extra edge. Nice beer, however.

0.75 l bottle. Dark reddish brown color with huge creamy head. Malty, grainy and parfumy aroma. Fairly dry, malty and woody flavor with caramel, pepper, clove, strawberry, cork and perhaps tannins. Spicy and bitter finish. Pleasant, perhaps the best beer from La Trappe.

At the 2007 Big Beer, Belgians, & Barleywines Festival in Vail. Pours dark brown with ruby undertones and a large off white head that leaves marvelous lacing. I really liked the toasted malt flavors that were in this beer. has a bit od caramel and anise flavors as well.

[bottle] Dark brown with a huge, thick head. Yeasty, fruity "Belgian" aroma. Flavour is malt and liquorice followed by a long spicy, leafy hop bitterness.

After a 5 min. struggle with the cork (a 750 ml bottle) a beautyful ruby color appears in my glass, with a thick and slowly diminishing foam that slowly reveals an earthy hop and malt character with some yeastiness. Flavour further adds some notes of wood? The mothfeel is creamy. Nice bitter finish. Great beer.
