Pours dark amber colored with a red gleam and a foamy tan head. Sweet soda pop-like berry flavor. Sweet flavor as well with some malt and quite a lot of berries. Foamy mouthfull.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Ungstrup (24024) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - APR 2, 2005
An opaque dark red beer with a brown head. The aroma is a weird sweet honey one. The flavor is sour malty with hints of chocolate.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 madsberg (7570) - Søborg, DENMARK - MAR 18, 2005
Bottled: Burgundy colour. Light brown coloured. Light spiced, fruity and sweet aroma. Flavour is fruity and malty. Is quite light. Ends on a fruity note. Quite nice, but not a trappist.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Hendo (110) - Sint Anthonis, NETHERLANDS - MAR 1, 2005
A good example of the Bock style. A good deep taste, A bass player could relate to this. :)
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Sully (1378) - Potts Point, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA - DEC 12, 2004
This is sitting in the glass for about 10 minutes before I try it and it has been very patient in waiting for me with a clean and creamy head on yop of a soft malty body. Lovely chocolate nose with a vanilla background. The flavour is also fine and well balanced. Given that it is a trappist beer there does appear to be some trace of Belgian character, but that may just be the power of suggestion.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 NoiZe (2325) - Amersfoort, NETHERLANDS - NOV 9, 2004
It’s a very nice dark bock. This one tastes great. It’s a smooth taste, soft and bitter. Very nice bitter aftertaste. Also nice when not cooled too much.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jbrus (4990) - Delft, NETHERLANDS - OCT 25, 2004
This is a bock I had to get used to first. Another advice is not to drink it too cold. I’d say about 12’Celsius would be best. It’s quite complex en bitter compared to most Dutch bocks nowadays. Light sweet, roasted, butterscotch.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 JorisPPattyn (6747) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - OCT 25, 2004
UPDATED: JUL 24, 2005 Retasted at the abbey on 23/07/05. Much better balance, harsh bitterness all but gone. Brewmaster is very anxious to point out that in his opinion, the beer had to go out of the brewery way too quickly. 2/3 of a year of lagering in the brewery has worked small marvel indeed.
Dark brown with some foxy highlights; yellow-brown head, some lace. Cucumber, cinnamon and dark malts, Tensoplast (I think that’s what US raters mean with Band-Aid) in the nose. Initial slight sourishness, woody taste, becoming bitter, very tannine-like. Liquorice, but not sweet. Harsh, burnt, woody, solvent-like bitterness. Becomes indifferent after some time. Well-bodied, filling, stout-like. Unrefined bitterness is a pity. Some American C-hops might have wrought marvels on this one.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 jerohen (1797) - Bussum, NETHERLANDS - OCT 23, 2004
Hazy brown coloured, initailly large beige head. Quite dry for a bock, the sweetness one usually finds in these brews is mostly absent. Nevertheless it failed to impress me, perhaps i’m just tired of all these bocks.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 bierkoning (8109) - La Tropica, NETHERLANDS - OCT 19, 2004
UPDATED: NOV 21, 2006 Big frothy head. Hoppy, somewhat peppery aroma and flavor. Just a hint of cinnamon that somehow overpowers the roasted malt. Long bitter aftertaste. Very well made bockbeer, one of the best Dutch bockbeers, in fact.
Blindfold test 2005 version. Herbs, yeast and sugar in the aroma. Yeasty flavor, very herbal. Chocolate, grapes. Not too well balanced, still a good beer (5 4 7 3 13 = 3.2)
2006 version: malt and licorice in the aroma. Sweet, caramelly flavor with roasted malt, laurel and licorice. Long roast aftertaste. tasty bockbeer. Well done, Lowieke!
