4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 Storm_Warning (56) - Suffolk, - JAN 25, 2012Currently drinking while typing. Once poured you have a great beer on front of you, great aromas of caramel, malt, toast and subtle booze. The look of it is also spotless, a full almost beige bubbly but creamy head sat on a beautiful mahogany depth in which light nicely but gently permeates. The taste is full, complex and clever. Starts with gentle hops and nice caramelled malts, also toasty and nutty, slows down into a nice burnt, smoky malt flavour with a lovely bitterness which surprises you. A nice but subtle hop note stays in the mouth in the long run. Great feel in the mouth, not thick or heavy but feels full and big, great carbonation that contains well in the mouth and also the foaminess that tickles the top lip. Exceptional beer, I think I will be missing it when the stock runs out until next autumn. Recommended!

330 ml bottle. K14J11. BB 10/2014. From bierzwerg.de.
Dark reddish brown colour with an average sized tan head.
Dark fruits, mild chocolate, yeast, malt and sugary sweetness in the aroma.
The flavour is brown sugar, syrup, chocolate, dark fruits, malt and mild hops. Quite tasty. Rather nice.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Pawola22 (3071) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 24, 2013
750ml bottle picked up at the monastery. Pours a lightly hazed, deep red-brown colored body with an inch thick, dense, creamy and foamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is deep caramel with a nice brown sugar and fruit cake sweetness as well as a light roast note, cocoa, licorice spice, and some yeast. Flavor is similar with maybe a bit more of a roast note throughout. Still plenty of deep caramels, raisin bread and fruit cake, a nice cocoa element, some brown sugar, and a bit of a yeasty note. Licorice spice and a light warmth comes through towards the end before this finishes dry and clean with a light roasty bitterness and a smooth cocoa and caramel note. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium-full body and a lively carbonation. Overall, a damn good dunkler bock. Very smooth caramels and cocoas with a nice roast, dark fruit, and yeast note. A bit warming, yet easy drinking and highly enjoyable. Great beer.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Cantabrian (378) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - APR 5, 2013
Best Bockbier ever. It seems that these very pious guys have managed to make a Bockbier with the character and complexity of a Belgian ale. Perfect appearance, so creamy that one would hardly believe it’s out of a bottle. All the basement fruits, the yeasty barn, late autumn scents and flavours. Everything so subtle and smooth that you’d hardly think it’s a rather high alcohol content. Perfection.

Medium to dark brown that is hard to see through with a thick, lasting, lacy, frothy, tan head. Smells of dark fruit (prunes and apricot) fills the glass with toasted, caramel and roasted malt and a hazelnut element with a bit of alcohol in the background but not that noticeable. Medium frothy oily body with faint carbonation. Nice sweet toasted malt taste and some light spice with a soft bitterness of a roast in the middle and finishes with a balance of sweet fruit and dark chocolate. Dry and spiced finish. Very easy to drink and the alcohol is only slightly noticeable. A nice bock.
