2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 hennes (932) - Fountain, Michigan, USA - FEB 5, 2002
I had a miserable brewpub Dubbel tonight as well and was hoping this beer would show me what the style is supposed to taste like. Sadly, it’s pretty weak out of the bottle, not much taste at all, just a hint of spice, and poor carbonation. What flavour there was was decent, but so small.

Pours a nice deep brown, ’Imagine That’, beige head that dissipates quickly, the lace is adequate. Nose is as ’Trappist’ said grape like, some chocolate tones, along with a bit of malt. Start sweet, the middle thin, and a bit sour, the finish is acidic, mild carbonation, hops present along with the alcohol, dry, winish. More thin than I would normally like, not great, but good none the less.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Dragonblaze99 (354) - Greater London, ENGLAND - JAN 25, 2002
Fruity uncomplicated flavor, no head to speak of. Packs a noticeable alcoholic kick.

My first Belgian ale. Dark red with liitle to no head. Fruity, wine-like aroma and taste. Different, but very enjoyable.

Pretty stuff. My first dubbel. Takes some getting used to. Winey/champagney aroma, taste, mouthfeel. OK...second try...very nice.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - DEC 17, 2001
Somewhat of a disappointment, as I had fond memories of this (and all of the La Trappes -- my first Trappist ales). Nice dark red color; big head dies quickly. Smells of bread, yeast and wine, but not very potent. Flavor is also a little on the weak side, though more complex: bock-like in character, with some maple-dark bread characteristics, wine again and some hoppiness. Finish is very smooth, clean and sweet. Certainly worth trying, but not on the level of, say, Orval or Westmalle.

Sickenly sweet

Dark reddish brown, almost grape colored. Fruity aroma of grapes present. Didnt seem overly complex. No real spicy flavors jumped out at me, just once again grape. Still a good beer.

pretty decent ale - made for malt lovers - not real complicated, but tasty

A good dubbel...not in the league of the Chimays but still enjoyable. Fruity aroma, dark brown body, moderate head with a smooth finish.
