It just doesn’t live up to it. It’s a bit tart and unbalanced and the palate is oddly watery considering the thickness of its head. Certainly drinkable but I won’t go out of my way for it. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 25, 2008 Bottled purchased in Fairfield, CT under the name Konings and directed here. Pours a very dark amber color with a small swirling head. Appears to even be some very some particles in there. Smells of alcohol in a very strong way in the beginning. I think I should have stored it for a bit to age it - I feel it would have been better. I also let it warm a bit and it brought out a much better aroma and taste on the palate. Certainly getting a little fruit on first taste with banana seeming to come out. Really? the beer got better and better as I went on drinking it. Finished very nice though a bit bitter and sour. borisz (182), Netherlands

Flavors of caramel, fruit, oak, and strong alcohol undertone. Held up well on the trip from Holland, and I even gave it a few months cellaring for good measure. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 10, 2008 Bottle. Pours brown leaning towards the red and quite hazy. thick beige foam dissipates quickly. Aroma, Banana, caramel and brown sugar, and dark fruits with some hops in the background. Flavor is earth with some dark fruits, and some hops trying to peak through. Finish is dry. For a 7% this is hidden so well you don’t even feel the warmth. Not bad, but definately not my favorite trappist by a lond shot. MrManning (1635), London, Ontario, Canada
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 10, 2008 Bottle- Pours a murky brown liquid, with a dense beige foam. Brown sugar, dark fruit, caramel malts, and candied fruit fill the nose, and are backed up with some leafy hops. Flavour profile is figs/prunes with caramelized fruit and bready rye sweetness. The hops are here and are subdued, allowing more sweetness to come out, but it finishes drier than expected. No detection of the alcohol in this dubbel. Bottle at Chaucer’s Pub. scanovajr (361), Stanford, California, USA
