Lubiere (4463), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Jan 2, 2006 Clear brown ale with a creamy white head. Sweet caramel aroma with orange, nuts, and smooth alcohol. In mouth, tingly soices come out over the sweet candy malt, with light alcohol notes. Bottle at Pub Italia. kujo9 (1077), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA Dec 29, 2005 11.2 oz bottle, gift pack w/ a glass purchased 12/23/05: Lasting beige head on a mohogany brown, hazy body. Aroma is metallic, buttery (diacetyl from age), earthy and leathery. This stuff is OLD!!!!!!!! Some raisiny dark fruit, but mosty just old and buttery! Well balanced, raisiny, buttery, toasty malt, and a bit of alcohol flavor. Higher carbonation, lighter med. body, and smooth. Not the beer I imagined, but then again, it seems sort of old!!! Will re rate if I get a better, more fresh bottle!!!! freekyp (900), Thomasville, North Carolina, USA Dec 19, 2005 Updated: Jun 19, 2006I’m all about the Beligians but I think I got a spoiled bottle here. It reeked of must old cellar and sewage and tasted about the same. Some Chimay-like notes shined through now and again, but the overall musty character was too much. I’ll definitely give it another shot.
ReRate 06/19/2006: Still innundated with a musty cellar aroma, but no sewage tones. Similar to a lighter bodies Chimay, it just does not have the style or delivery of it’s contemporary. Dissapointing.
Bart (1625), Vosselaar, Belgium Dec 17, 2005 Dark red-brown colour, heavy aroma, herby some caramel. Yeast. smouth and creamy palate, bitter and herby finish. Panzerfaust (393), Santiago, Chile Dec 16, 2005 Dark brown beer with some red tones and a huge beige and creamy head with good retention. Aroma is pleasant, fruity and rich in malt with apples, pears, banana and small hints of nougat. Flavor is surprisingly bittersweet with notes of coffee, bitter chocolate and hazelnuts. Texture is a little thin but the mouthfeel is very good. Aftertaste is long and more bitter than sweet. Great with cheeses!. destroye7 (299), Melbourne, Australia Dec 10, 2005 11.2 fl oz bottle. Dark red beer. banana aroma. Nice carbonation. Smooth beer to drink. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA Nov 30, 2005 Better than the Blond at least. Dark reddish brown body with a small fizzy head and absolutely no lacing. Berry dominates the aroma and flavor. I can’t stand their yeast strain, it makes their beers like a musty basement. Not much for hops here. Blah. JanPrimus1982 (48), Delft, Netherlands Nov 24, 2005 This abbay dubbel has much more flavor than the one I tried yesterday. Nice dubbel beer of the trappist brewery Koningshoeven. Long lasting light brown head, dark body. Excellent beer!
