3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Koningshoeven label. Brown pour with garnet highlights. Frothy, ivory head. Dark fruit and malt nose with an almost sourdough-like yeast note. Creamy and sweet mouth feel with very little flavor.. There is a bit of dark fruit as well as a nice yeast note but it comes across as watered down. Bummer.

Poured into a La Trappe Chalice. I had to have this dubbel a few times before rating and I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised by the overall taste and feel of this dubbel. Not much of an aroma in the glass. The appearance was reddish to rusty brown with visible sediment and plenty of carbonation adding about an inch of head that steadily remained and laced throughout. This was a very smooth beer to me, very similar to the Ommegang Abbey Ale but with far less bitterness in the finish. Some mild yeast and malt in the taste as well as the plum/dark fruit flavor present in the back. The tastes were mild but it works. I have to drink this a few more times for sure but I am pretty surprised to say this is one of my favorite dubbels.

Belle double couleur brune claire. Mousse aux teintes de café. Peu d’amertume, de la rondeur. Du sucre mais très maitrisé. Des notes de grains torréfiés grillés, prune confite.
Une très bonne brune tout en douceur.

330ml bottle and 500ml bottle or crock. Filtered, then bottled with yeast and sugar. First brewed in 1987. Ingredients: Water, Barley malt, Hops, Yeast. "Discover this genuine dark Trappist beer with a gentle flavour, creamy head and pronounced bouquet.La Trappe Dubbel has a deep brown colour and attractive beige froth. The use of caramel malt gives it a gentle aromatic caramelised quality. It has a rich malty flavour with a touch of sweetness. Post-fermenting La Trappe Dubbel is a smooth drink, and yet has some real body and intense flavour to it.

Extraordinaire !

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
A 330ml bottle with a best before date of July 2016, poured into a Chimay goblet glass. It poured a deep dark brown / amber colour with a one finger beige head that dissipated fairly quickly but left nice lacing. Aromas of raisins, dried cherry, toasted malts, caramel, toffee and bubblegum. Tastes of sweet dark stone fruits of plum, prunes, raisin and cherry, grape juice, banana and a light toffee finish. Creamy, medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall a very nice Dubbel that is tasty and easy to drink.
