3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
The classic double La Trappe, with light beige, crackling head which collapses quite quickly and is almost completely gone in the end. Colour is a very dark burgundy with a certain orange hue, hazy after adding the deposit. Subtle but quite pleasant aroma of overripe plums, raisins, dried banana, brownies, toasted bread, iron, cloves, citrus peel, candi sugar, brown rhum. Taste starts sweetish, some candi sugar, candied fruits, pear, with medium strong, mineral-like and sourish carbonation, quite tingling on the sides of the tongue, otherwise slick and smooth mouthfeel, caramelly maltiness with nutty touches here and there, a bit chocolatey even but in a subtle way, some iron, finishing with slight toasted bitterness, some residual sweetness from the onset but not cloyingly so, leafy hop bitterishness and just a little bit of warming, gin-like alcohol, subtle and not disturbing in any way; also a somewhat dull sourishness lingering on, quite long. Sweetish to dryish in other words, but all -ish, if you see what I mean... A bit too restrained for my taste, but admittedly this is a well-made dubbel. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a typical example of the style in order to get acquainted with it. Still, the La Trappe range cannot convince me like the Belgian trappist ales do, they just do not have the same amount of distinctiveness and personality, at least since Bavaria took over.

330ml bottle from Vanuxeem. Pours deep amber with off white head. Good aroma of warming stewed fruits. Taste is a big flavoursome dubbel with dark fruits, malts, bubblegum and caramel. Rich, smooth and delicious. One of the best dubbels out there in my opinion.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours a beautiful, mostly clear mahogany brown, ruby hue, with a big tan orange-ish head, good lacing. Aroma is very fruity, dried plums, dates, raw cane sugar, sweet caramel. Grenadine syrup pops up too. Artificial sweeteners (Assugrin) in the after taste. The taste is very smooth, contained sweetness, with just a little bit of acidity to balance. Medium bodied, oily palate with just a bit too much carbonation but a very long sweet, syrupy finish that turns into artificial sweetener, extra long. Really, really long. Definitely one of the longest finishes I’ve had. Very nice, not cloying like most Dubbels, but too much artificial sweeteners in the after taste, especially since it is so long.

Bottle. Amder-brown with a creamy off-white head. The aroma is fruity, caramel malt, some yeast. The flavour is sweet with a fruity profile, again a little yeast. Not the greatest dubbel.
