Named after brother Isidorus, Koningshoeven Abbey’s first brewer. Brewed to mark the occasion of the Trappist brewery’s 125th anniversary in 2009, Isid’or was so well received that it earned itself a permanent place in La Trappe’s line-up. Unfiltered, slightly sweet amber ale with a hint of caramel, which continues to ferment after bottling and has a rich, slightly bitter flavour, and a fruity aftertaste. Wheat & barley malts, Perle hop.

Bottle at home. The colour is cloudy reddish brown with a medium, beige head. Aroma of dried fruit, brown sugar, oak, leather and caramel. Is also pretty sweet. The flavour mirrors the aroma but adds a touch of alcohol. Slick mouth feel, and has a light bitterness. A sweet but balanced Belgian ale. Very nice.

Taboada (280) - Compostela (Galiza), - MAY 19, 2014
Tasted from tap at Nederlandse Bierporeffestival on 17/05/2014. Dark amber colour with a pefect creamy head. Full body and nice carbonation. The alcohol is very well balanced with the taste. Taste, aroma and aftertaste is predominated by the caramel. There are some fruit on the taste, maybe banana and orange. Finish is fruity and a little spicy. Next one please!

On tap. Pours a reddish brown with full retentive head. Aromas of dark raisins, copper, and spice. Rich flavours of dark fruit, spice, malts and tobacco. Great. Not normally a fan of big Belgians on tap. I may have to convert.

Bottle. Dark caramel body with light brown foam. Aromas of sweet caramel (taffy), white grapes, little bubblegum, some basement funk, dried spices (cloves?). Taste is sweet and sour with a strong booze kick, very sticky, hints of rice/white wine. The alcohol dominates the taste a little too much. Aftertaste is sticky again, not a thirst quencher.
