Apparently a mixture of the recipes of the two beers preferred by father Bernardus, the abbott of Koningshoeven for 25 years and brewed in his honour to celebrate this service record. Tasted from draft at the Trappistenfeesten in Berlare. Stable, irregularly edged, lightly tanned head, colour a dark bronze with a rusty brown hue; aroma nutty and somewhat smoky, candi sugar, pear, dates, bourbon, leather and unfortunately clear oxidation as well; taste rounded, sweet with a somewhat sticky effect, red fruits, spicy accents, orangey, then a caramel- and nut-like, smooth maltiness, a bit slick, aftertaste with both a spicy hoppiness and a bit of warming, bourbon-like alcohol, dryish, medium long with a bit of stickiness from the beginning lingering on.

Brownish orange with big foamy head on top. Aroma has dried fruits, sweet fruity notes and surprisingly fresh aroma. Some sweet caramel malts is present. Taste has caramel, syrup and some fruity notes. Somehow in the after taste there is hints of alcohol. A bit light body and pretty high carbonation.

Yeast odor. The taste is good with some yeast and bread. To be a Belgian Ale, I’m impressed. Good to drink. Good bitterness to the aftertaste that fills the mouth a weak moment. Tasty and almost a bit refreshing to drink. Very good beer. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.

750mL, corked (synthetic) and caged. Gushed on cork removal but I was prepared and caught all, sweet and filling aroma of jammy fruit (red berries, cherry, plum, apple, light grape) and something around the solventy phenol area. Pours deep, dark ruby with a short-lived tan head. Taste is a bit airy, as well, but also jammy as above with a little pear, peach, and slight yeast. Has stronger bitterness than expected (still doesn’t reach ’medium’ but is strong for style), some booze but it’s not too strong; light warmth is far from of-putting. That solvent/plastic character is still here -- faint, but still here -- and it’s joint by a gentle smoke phenol. Oily and swishable medium body, maltiness is stripped a bit thin. Some lighter peppery/spicy kick, but nowhere near Saison territory. A little out of the ordinary for a Belgian, has the standard Trappe/K-h flavor but also turns up the grittier, earthier inputs (bitterness, light smoke, as before, and a toasted-toffee undertone). A darker, miniature Quad and ultimately a flawed success.

(backlog 2013) 75cl bottles from source 2013. Tasted like a mellow and even sweeter version of their Isid’or and reminded me of a caramel-infused spéciale belge: nutty, candied orange, honeyed caramel and toasted malts allowing a few gentle natural hop prickles to shine through. Used for cooking, as a boring after a while.

Bottle:   Caramel, somewhat dark and dirty, moderate to large foamy sandy head, fairly nice lacing.   Sweet bready and musty nose, some caramel like malts.   Has that dusty Belgian tinge that says its authentic.   Soft carbonation, moderate body and mouthfeel.   Falls off quickly tho.   A little metallic on the backside, but just only a little.   Smells and starts out fairly nice, but ends quickly and a little tin like.

Dobre piwo smaczne bursztynowego rubinowego koloru. Z fajna puszysta i kremowa piana. Piwo niestety posiada syntetyczny korek, ktorego z trudem zdjac. Ale etykieta ladna. Chucznie wystrzelilo i ukazal sie na samym poczatku zapach pieczonych jablek i gruszek. W smaku sliwkowa marmolada i cukierki karmelowe. Nie bylo jednak natretnie slodkawe. W tle lekkie chmiele i koncowka takze lekko wytrawna. Ciekawe przyjemne piwo i niezbyt ciezkie.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Dominated by caramel, with a mix of herbs and spices. Decent.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Hazy copper colour, rich head. Caramelly nose with honey and slight white pepper. Mid sweet with medium body and soft mouthfeel. Caramelly with notes of marzipan and grass. Low bitterness. Mild and harmonious.
