In Batch 11 Malbec barrels were used, though a rather large portion of Quadrupel aged on new wood has been added too. This batch is quite complex. The aroma of the Malbec is very noticable, lots of oak flavours from medium toast, and vanilla and almond from high toast barrels, floral aromas from Acasia and obviously the beer aromas from the quadrupel. Very robust and rich in tannins, which warrants a bit of extra maturation in the bottle to let the complexity increase and the flavour become rounder. While the red wine influence is noticable, the wood has the dominant note. A must for everyone who likes heavy beer and/or wine with lots of wood flavour and aroma. 55% Used Malbec barrels 20% New French oak, medium toast 20% New French oak, high toast 5% Acacia wood

Cork and cage bottle shared at Leighton’s - thanks to Scopey for this one. Batch 11. Opaque brown, still, small ring of tan head, dotted lacing. Aroma is raisin, teacake, bready. Body is medium, smooth, low carbonation, a little oily. Taste is tired creamy malts, raisin, sweet stewed fruits, wood and booze. Not bad. I don’t see it improving with any more age.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Scopey. Pours lightly hazy a amber with no head. The nose has some ripe and lightly tangy fruits, berries, grapes, toffee. Medium to heavy sweet flavor with hints of peat, lots of caramel, toffee, dates, dried berries, rich bread. Full bodied, lightly chewy, with soft carbonation. Lightly warming on the finish, with touches of woody dryness, faint earth, lots more dried fruits, pear, toffee. Very tasty beer.

Bottle split at LKS, thanks to Bropey, 21/01/16. Murky chestnut brown with a thin light tan covering that dissipates to edgeing. Nose is rich fruit cake, toffee, light spice, earthy, dates, raisens, caramelised brown sugar. Taste comprises rich malt, Xmas cake, dates, figgy jam, dates, marzipan. Full bodied, moderate to flat carbonation, warming alcohol in the close. Ok quad.

Bottle via trade with Rene. It pours cloudy deep purple with a tiny beige rim. The nose is rich, bitter - sweet, wood, vanilla, dried fruits, creamy, red wine, currants and some meatiness. The taste is rich, oily, dried fruits, red grape, toffee, vanilla, honeycomb, damp wood, chewy malt and some warming alcohol. Medium - full body and limited carbonation. A bit flat. A touch muddled. Ok, but one of the poorest out of the series.

Een heel rijk, licht fruitig aroma. Er komt bijna geen schuim op als je hem uitschenkt. De smaak neigt enorm hard naar wijn. Voor mij een goed bier, maar toch een van de mindere ’batch’ - uitgaven

Troebel ’vies’bruin bier zonder schuimkraag. Aroma van noten, hout en wijn in de neus. In de mond ook vanille, rozijnen, basterdsuiker, mout. Smaak is vooral zoet. Erg zacht en volle body, nauwelijks co2.

Murky brown with pretty much no head. Aroma is raisins, red wine, oak, brown sugar, honey, dates. Full bodied, sticky and thick mouthfeel, no carbonation, sweet on the palate, complex, long sweet finish. Taste is raisins, dates, brown sugar, honey, sherry, subtle hint of red wine and oak.

Wow, cool beer. Bottle from High Spirits. Mahogany with a minimal film of tan head on top, or maybe its sediment floating? Could use better head retention. Mostly bright. Aroma is sweet raisin juice, prune, rum, figs, black currant, candied cherry, rich cedar wood, light vanilla, some leather. Wow! Body is medium-medium-heavy, lightly syrupy-starchy, with medium-light, super-fine carbonation, light burn. Flavor is a nutty, rich cedar wood up front, a bit of that palo santo wood flavor I get from the eponymous Dogfishead beer. Raisin, rum, raw sugar, bit of candied cherry, a touch of clean, woody bitterness in the finish to provide just enough balance. Crisp/satisfying finish; it’s surprising that this isn’t at all cloying, given how sweet it is. Reminds me a bit of the Pannepot Reserva (maybe? wish I could do a side by side, I’m sure they would seem quite different in that context.) Overall: an amazing beer! So good. Head retention could be better.

Bottle. Pours a headless dark brown, slightly murky beer. Only a very small head form when poured, but disappears completely within seconds. Aroma has loads of caramel toffee fudge, rich malty notes, woody presences and some red wine characters. Very full aroma, nice and complex. Flavor is very sweet with touches of roast and caramel again. The vineous notes appear in the very back of the palate and the sweetness is everywhere. No carbonation, very juicy and long sweet aftertaste. No real boozy notes detected here. Very nice stuff!!
