2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
In short: A big uber-sweet sticky amber beer. Meh
How: Tap at ’t Arendsnest, Amsterdam
The look: Cloudy amber body topped by very small beige head
In long: Nose is sweetened baked fruits, some wood and booze. Taste is just so uber-sweet that I almost didn’t finish my small glass. Plenty of sugars, candied apples, butterscotch hard-candies, more brown sugar, lots of vanilla, rich caramel, sweet dark fruits, alcohol. No hops presence whatsoever. Mouthfeel was sticky-sweet and with a medium carbonation. I was never a big fan of the regular La Trappe Quad and this barrel aged version is a step down from a beer I don’t really like to start with. Just too sweet for me. And of course the beer has high ratings because it is a big beer. I could conclude this rating by asking if ratebeer’s notation system favors bigger more intense beers over the more subtle elegant session beers. But I am not one to end a rating with a rhetorical question. Or am I?
