La Trappe Quadrupel

Pours a copper/brown color, much lighter then I expected. It has banana, plums, raisin, cinnamin, caramel, and soem spice. Mouthfeel is rather fizzy. It’s okay.

Bottle at home (bought a crate of it in Belgium last Christmas). This has long been one of my favourite beers from the low countries. Christmasey flavours of cinnamon, bananas, caramel and a wondeful fruity richness. The alcohol is not really noticeable despite weighing in at 10%. A perfect beer in every respect and it is Dutch not Belgian!

Intense dark spices, caramel, raisins, fruit aroma. Poured dark brown with a medium sized off white head. Taste is slightly bitter at the end, fronted by sweetness. Well balanced as expected. Could drink a lot of this, even at 10%.

11.2 oz bottle poured into a Yeti snifter. This is lighter in color than the dubbel, more red than brown. It smells like sweet fruits and sugar. La Trappe Quadrupel in a Croek. Pretty Bloody good too. Hints of plum, raisin and rotten cherry beneath a soft sweetishness ballanced by about 4 volumes of CO2. Alcohol flavour bacame evident after the hour, and many complexities showed up with it. Sweet Malt, Apricots and Pears became the call for the afternoon and hints of phenolic spicyness too.

This quad is a huge disappointment. It pours a cloudy reddish-brown color with a very minimal head. The aroma is quite sweet and even a little sour, with some hints of apples, grapes and oranges. The nose had a champagne-like character. The flavors are nothing like a good quad should be. This is very sour and way too fruity. There is hardly any sense of big maltiness like a good quad should have. The aftertaste is absoutely horrendious. It’s very sour and bitter at the same time, which for me isn’t a good combination. I took only two or three sips of this and chucked the rest of my 750ml bottle. I don’t know if it’s a bad bottle, but I’m not really willing to buy another one to find out.
