craftycarl21 (510), South Hero, Vermont, USA Jan 12, 2009 Served on tap at Volo in Toronto. Pours a deep ruby with a small head. Aroma is heavy with fig, raisin, dark sugar, sweet malt, and alcohol. Flavor is very nice- sticks with the sweet theme, and the alcohol provides for a beautiful warming finish. Solid palate; excellent quad. JCastner (102), New York, USA Jan 11, 2009 Pours a deep burgundy with a dissipating white head. Aroma is of musty grapes, cherries, and of warming alcohol. Medium mouthfeel with a high level of carbonation. Taste is first of unripened fruit, followed by sweet malt and a dry, harsh bitter finish. Not one of my favorite quads but a worthy effort nonetheless. Travlr (694), Washington, Washington DC, USA Jan 10, 2009 Amber colored with slight haze. Aroma of dates and raisins. Flavor of malt, vanilla, background spice. Very nice. Would like to try it aged. MennoO (112), Haarlem, Netherlands Jan 9, 2009 2 bottles, amber red, really nice. I drank it together with a 2 years old vintage which wasn’t clear anymore, looked awful, though tasted a lot more caramelish and richer in general, which was pleasant (though i normally don’t like sweet beers). sdriessen (203), Dunedin, New Zealand Jan 7, 2009 Pours amber/red.
Strong aromas, initially banana, malt, bubblegum and ripe orange. Unfortunately a bit phenolic, and kind of like chlorine...
Flavours are a bit overpowered by alcohol. Some raisin, banana and chocolate. Too sweet, like brown sugar. Some malt, almost zero hops present.
The first time I tried this I thought the ABV was to pronounced. Picked this for my 100th beer rating. rough to compare to Westvleteren Abt 12. A cloudy red with a creamy head. Very smooth with slight taste of citrus flavors are well balanced.. True to the Trappist tradition. I don’t feel the ABV is completely hidden yet it is much smoother then the last time I tried this beer. I’m happy I let it sit and condition more. Beerlando (2281), Orlando, Florida, USA Jan 4, 2009 Koningshoeven bottle, aged about one year. Pours mostly clear, dark reddish-amber in color. Fat, effervescent bubbles pool into a thick, foamy blanket that sticks around for a good while. Soapy sheet lacing breaks apart and drips back into the body, scant spots remaining behind to dry. Big aromas of candy sugar, caramel, dates and figs are first to hit. A creamy wave of vanilla sugar and lactose is son to follow. Perfumy flowers lend spicy depth and complexity to the nose. Flavors are rich and mostly sweet, a myriad of dark, sugary fruit variations playing off of one another. Notes of hazelnut, maple, candied pears, vanilla and cream enhance the decadent, dessert-like taste. A substantial, creamy body finishes of the sticky side, but the 10% ABV is almost completely concealed, making it dangerously drinkable. This is a very nice brew, but it is not in the league of it’s elite Trappist brethren, most notably Rochefort and Westy.
