La Trappe Quadrupel

Koningshoeven 11.2 oz bottle, aged about almost two years. The first time I tried this I thought the ABV was to pronounced. Picked this for my 100th beer rating. rough to compare to Westvleteren Abt 12. A cloudy red with a creamy head. Very smooth with slight taste of citrus flavors are well balanced.. True to the Trappist tradition. I don’t feel the ABV is completely hidden yet it is much smoother then the last time I tried this beer. I’m happy I let it sit and condition more.

Koningshoeven bottle, aged about one year. Pours mostly clear, dark reddish-amber in color. Fat, effervescent bubbles pool into a thick, foamy blanket that sticks around for a good while. Soapy sheet lacing breaks apart and drips back into the body, scant spots remaining behind to dry. Big aromas of candy sugar, caramel, dates and figs are first to hit. A creamy wave of vanilla sugar and lactose is son to follow. Perfumy flowers lend spicy depth and complexity to the nose. Flavors are rich and mostly sweet, a myriad of dark, sugary fruit variations playing off of one another. Notes of hazelnut, maple, candied pears, vanilla and cream enhance the decadent, dessert-like taste. A substantial, creamy body finishes of the sticky side, but the 10% ABV is almost completely concealed, making it dangerously drinkable. This is a very nice brew, but it is not in the league of it’s elite Trappist brethren, most notably Rochefort and Westy.

all of these guys beers suck ass. they all smell exactly the same. hard candy sugar. nothing more. they taste pretty similar, but this was better than the dubble which was better than the tripple. both not good. nor this thing. the flavor was decent, sweet and balanced, but the aroma was annoying. whoever just gave it a 4.9 is on 7 drugs.

Wow. The smell gets you first, like a marvelous bag of nuts and berries. The head is minimal, leaving some lasting lacing and a white ring around the glass. The beer it self has a beautiful taste- fruity and smoky. Maybe Apricot, a little nutmeg, apple. Not your typical malts and very little hop acidity. This and lite, smooth.

Bottle. Labled Konings Hoeven Trappist Quadrupel. Pours a beautiful and clear dark amber with a 1 finger tannish head. Aroma of caramels, malts and dark fruits. Nice bite on the palate and not overly sweet or fizzy. After taste doesnt linger too long. Even with a high abv the alcohol is surprisingly subdued. I like that! A really enjoyable Trappist quad. I will buy this again for sure.

Bottle. Pours clear amber red color, frothy white head and little lacing. Aroma of caramel, pear, raisin, crisp apples. Flavor is raisins, dark fruit, brown sugar, apples. Crisp finish, drinkable, very enjoyable.

Poured a deep amber body over a small tan head. Smell of rasins and dark fruit, candied surgar, quite sweet. Tasted of sweet dark fruits with sour hints, caramel, and light coffee. Very nice, slight bitter hop. Spices as well, coriander. Oily on the palate with a light fizz. Not quite as good as the trple but excellent.

33cl BBE 5/09. Dark ruby brown, small lacey beige head. Sweet pear nose, candi sugar, mild spices, alcohol, very generic Strong Belgian feel. Balanced flavor with pear, little aniseed spices, candi sugar malts, alcohol in the finish. Full bodied with silky carbonation. Its balanced and nice, but way too simple for a trappist this big. That pear just keeps bugging me.
