Ramenen (453), San Salvador, El Salvador Apr 26, 2008 Bottle. Bought it at New Beer Distributors in NYC. Pours a burgundy color. Medium bodied, sweet malty taste, very rich and warming. madquacker (706), Canberra ACT, Australia Apr 25, 2008 A powerful creamy aftertaste is the signature of this beer. Dark and warming alcohol with a sweet creamy overlay. Chewy too. Beautiful. SamGamgee (1394), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA Apr 25, 2008 33cl bottle. Pours a dark amber-red with a lacy head; a little light for a quad, but still nice looking. The aroma is a little tart and yeasty with a healthy dose of alcohol that burns a little. Caramel, raspberry, yeasty tanginess and some bubble-gum flavors. At first, the funky tartness is pretty noticeable, but it mellows as the beer warms. Finishes dry with a sharp alcohol bite that is slightly distracting. Pretty full body with smooth, creamy carbonation. A little different than the other trappist quads that I’ve had, with less malt richness and more alcohol bite. Almost leaning toward a tripel with the dryer spicier qualities. beerguy101 (3861), Newark, California, USA Apr 23, 2008 This quad pours a dark amber color from a 33cl bottle. Large sized white foamy head, with good retention and nice lacing. The aroma is malty, spicy and sweet. A full bodied Belgian Quadruple. The malts are fruity and sweet, with some biscuit malt at the finish. Nice dark fruit and slightly spicy as well. The 10% alcohol is well hidden. Nice sipping beer. The flavors intensify and mellow as this beer warms. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. AgentSteve (1334), SF Bay Area, California, USA Apr 22, 2008 Pours an attractive amber mahogany with a two finger off white head that persists. Nose is interesting, with malt and a bready aroma. A touch of brown sugar if you inhale deeply. The flavor is richer and very little trace of a bready influence can be found. Much more dried fruit and caramel along with candied sugars. A bit of a dry finish rounds this out nicely. Lively on the palate. soyorganic (217), Denver, Colorado, USA Apr 20, 2008 Draught: dark red/copper. Sweet aroma. The beer is smooth, rich and very sweet with a sweet aftertaste. The high alcohol content was not apparent in taste. This beer is a high quality beer, but almost too sweet for me. chimpscampee (556), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Apr 19, 2008 Complex so that it is peppery, paricularly in the finish yet I do not despair because of excessive acidity. Yet is is also tangy, dry, and sweet, perhaps a tad too sweet for a top ranking. Dates, figs, rasins, coriander, orange, Lots of malt, medium-low carbonation. The yeast and 10% alcohol are apparent but do not overwhelm. On tap at Brasserie V by Camp Randall in Madison. cyrenaica (435), Milton, Ontario, Canada Apr 19, 2008 16 oz draught
10.0% ABV
I tried this on draught on April 11, 2008 at "Smokeless Joe’s" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a dark reddish brown with a thick, long lasting white head. The aroma was thick with yeast and some sweet caramel malt. The mouthfeel was thick, creamy, and mildly carbonated. The flavour was brown sugar sweet, with some yeasty hints. Not quite as sickly sweet as a Samichlaus of Hardy’s.
