i bought it in a pint/glass gift set under the moniker "Koenings Hoeven Quadrupel Trappist Ale". When poured, NO head was produced. Flavor was pretty good, with plum and raisins and malt.
did i not let it ferment properly? why was there no head? most people seem to report a beautifully laced head. i got nothin’.
i’ll try it again, at the very least to get another trappist glass, but i donno if its in my radar of favorite beers.
granted, though, i’m not much of a belgian guy. mtdshn (174), Moline, Illinois, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 1, 2008 Bottle. Poured a surprisingly clear reddish brown with a good amount of head, that lasted for only a minute. Aromas of cherries, beet sugar, molasses, some light malt notes. Mouthfeel is fairly sweet, thick, but with a striking metallic note to it (it’s an older bottle, so that may explain it). A decent quad, but definitely not the best. A little too light for my liking, but a good choice if you don’t want something as intense as say, a Chimay Bleu. smith4498 (864), Miami, Florida, USA

Flavor is mildly sweet with some spices and bitterness. The alcohol is slightly noticable but not overwhelming. A very well made quad. Not the best but very good nonethelesss. I will definately drink this again. borisz (182), Netherlands

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 18, 2008 From a bottle into a trappist glass. Very nice looking beer. Poured a slightly cloudy amber with a thick white head that lingered for a very long time. The alcohol seemed a little overwhelming at first, but this beer really hit its stride about a third of they way into the glass. The spices and fruitiness came to the front, and the alcohol added a prefect kick at the back of the throat. it did get a little heavy on the alcohol towards the end, but all in all a really good beer. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 13, 2008 Bottle at Chaucer’s Pub- Brown liquid sits beneath a foamy off white cloud. Good lace throughout. Nose is very fruity. Dark fruit like plum, some fig, raisin. Lots of bubblegum esters and also quite yeasty and spicy. Sweet dark fruit flavour profile consists of fig, prune, red cherries. There’s lots of spiciness and yeasty flavours with rye bread and some caramel. Excellent creamy finish with lingering bitterness and dried fruit flavours. Certainly a sipper. A good choice for #1200.
