smith4498 (816), Miami, Florida, USA Mar 1, 2008 Pours a dark amber with tan head. Aromas of grapes, raisins, figs. Flavor is mildly sweet with some spices and bitterness. The alcohol is slightly noticable but not overwhelming. A very well made quad. Not the best but very good nonethelesss. I will definately drink this again. borisz (180), Netherlands Feb 22, 2008 Bottle 33 CL, Nice beer, amber, clear, frothy, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, medium sourness, medium body, padrefan98 (787), (San Diego) Santee, California, USA Feb 19, 2008 On tap at O’Briens in San Diego. Flavors of some spice and yeast. A very nice example of a Quadrupel. Scauca (408), Lovere, Italy Feb 19, 2008 Very lacing head covers a nutty amber ale. Spicy and fruity, figs and raisins above all. Rounded and smooth. Alcohol is little noticeable. Flavourful, full bodied, sweet. KnN (712), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Feb 18, 2008 From a bottle into a trappist glass. Very nice looking beer. Poured a slightly cloudy amber with a thick white head that lingered for a very long time. The alcohol seemed a little overwhelming at first, but this beer really hit its stride about a third of they way into the glass. The spices and fruitiness came to the front, and the alcohol added a prefect kick at the back of the throat. it did get a little heavy on the alcohol towards the end, but all in all a really good beer. MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Feb 13, 2008 Bottle at Chaucer’s Pub- Brown liquid sits beneath a foamy off white cloud. Good lace throughout. Nose is very fruity. Dark fruit like plum, some fig, raisin. Lots of bubblegum esters and also quite yeasty and spicy. Sweet dark fruit flavour profile consists of fig, prune, red cherries. There’s lots of spiciness and yeasty flavours with rye bread and some caramel. Excellent creamy finish with lingering bitterness and dried fruit flavours. Certainly a sipper. A good choice for #1200. BritAlesRule (84), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Feb 11, 2008 Surprising that this fine quad, a trappist from the Netherlands no less is one of my new favorites. I found a site online where one guy rated all of the trappists and his scores for the Achel and LaTrappe beers were very low. I feel this is a very refined quad and holds it’s own with not only the Chimay Grand Reserve and St Bernardus Abt 12, but also the Roche 10. Now I can’t wait to find a bottle of Achel Extra Bruin!
As for the beer itself, it’s an indulgence in taste and mouthfeel while keeping a classic profile... the sugars, the yeast, the body all excell. norsedoc (162), USA Feb 10, 2008 On tap. Orange/brown with thin off-white head. Smells of raisin and toasted malt. Taste is much the same. Fairly sweeter than I was expecting.
