Bottle. Cloudy medium amber color with a large frothy good lacing off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty and yeasty, alcohol, sweet, spices. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is moderate alcoholic. Very nice and complex.

UPDATED: FEB 20, 2005 [A 3 year old bottle of this surfaced in my cupboard and I noticed, that it was the first beer I entered on RateBeer 2½ years ago and therefore some 3500 sampled beers ago, so I thougt I’d resample it] A clear red beer with sediment floating around and a nice light brown head. The aroma is fruity with notes of yeast and spices I pick up coriander. The flavor is very sweet with the alcohol giving it warmth, it is very fruity with notes of prunes and wood as well as oranges and plums. Not much change in the ratings, but a better description than first time around. I’m pretty sure, I won’t go thru every beer I’ve had to rerate them. [Original rating: A very delightful fruity smell. A good flavor but a little too much alcolhol taste - La Trappe triple is better. 7/4/8/3/14]

(Bottle 30 cl) Dark amber colour which hazes if you pour the abundant sediment. Fairly small head, but it sticks to the glass. Lovely aroma of figs. Sweetish and extremely potent with lovely, fruity ale-esters. Notes of chocolate, nuts, figs, dates, caramel - all the goodies. Lovely beer. 311002

33 cL bottle. Pours slight hazy and deep amber with a white lacing head. Wineous and mild fruity aroma. Creamy carbonated mouthfeel. Fruity, light wineous and heavy caramel malt flavour. Medium sweet. Towards the finish a distinct wineous flavour and alcohol presence provide some warmth. Finish is a complex lingering fruitiness.

Bottled. Dark reddish amber colour, mediumsized beige head. Raisins, sweet malts and caramel in aroma, with hints of alcohol. Flavour is raisins, sweet malts, fruits and caramellish. Alcohol also present here. A very complex brew, with sweet malts and hops coming clearer in aftertaste. Wellbalanced, but still has a bit too strong sting of alcohol in it.

Sampling of the 1992 version in 2002: Dark amber. Aroma of berries and malt. Very malty, rich, bready, big toffee flavour. It has matured and developed better wonderfully, gone is the syrupiness, and you can’t notice the alcohol. Worth waiting for...

Brown color; medium sized head. The aroma is mild, but also perfumy and fruity, with caramel. It has a good caramel flavor and malt, with decent residual sweetness, well balanced by some bitterness and a light, sweet nutty touch. Smooth and elegant vintage, very enjoyable.

2009-06-17, draught at Monk’s Café - Wallingatan, Stockholm, 7-4-7-3-13=34
Bright amber color, creamy head, nice lace. Malty aroma, lightly fruity (apples, and this is not a good sign). Medium body, sweetish caramel flavor. The bitterness is surpassed by the alcohol warmth; the final is a bit fruity too. Boozey.

2002-07-07, bottle, vintage 2000-2001, 7-4-7-3-14=35
Amber-brown colour, misty. Nice malt aroma in the beginning, with porto notes; but later the aroma becomes poorer. Strong body, sweet and malty; the alcohol is quite hidden, but the mouth is too sweet; also the palate is not enough balanced with bitterness, and the hop aroma is quite poor. Getting warmer, it develops a deeper caramel character, evidentiating mostly in the palate. Pleasant, but nothing to be compared with a real trappist ale.
