3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 CQC (224) - Sydney, - SEP 12, 2008
The local shop sold out of these on the day of arrival. That’s very unusual considering the general bland beer expectation of Antipodeans. Excellent aroma on this as expected, the flavor was a bit overpowered by the alcohol content – but I can live with that. I’m getting a malty viscous chocolate, caramel fruitiness. But not too fruity which is ideal. The hops are a mild come on and the barley rounds it off nicely. It’s low on the fizz, minimal head, and a thin auburn colour. The 500ml bottle is a sexy jug mockup and that all adds to the ambience!

750 ml bottle courtesy of Jonas (non-RB). Pours tiny hazy reddish brown with a big frothy white head that slowly dissipates while leaving lots of thick lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet with apples, pears, cereal, alcohol, wood, dark sweet bread, very ripe oranges, cinnamon, dark grapes and hints of burnt caramel and toffee. Taste is sweet and malty with apples, pears, dark bread, wood, dark grapes, cinnamon, liquorice root, ginger, cereal, golden syrup, alcohol and hints if dark honey and resin. Mouthfeel is round, boozy, sticky sweet and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and tiny bitter with dark bread, apples, pears, wood and alcohol.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Jessop (136) - AUSTRALIA - MAY 26, 2012
Pour light tan and very turbid with a average sized head. The aromas show notes of fruits in particular a sweet alcoholic banana. It has flavours of rich dark fruits including figs and some peppery spice to round out the malts. It finishes with a hint of sweetness and alcoholic warmth.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 ElDesmadre (476) - Mikołów, POLAND - MAY 25, 2012
Bottle. Reddish brown with a creamy, stable head. Very intensive aroma - vinous, spicy (cloves), woody and above all fruity (apples, cherries, pears, bananas and plums). Full body, medium carbonation. Taste is sweet, skilfully balanced by a sharp, almost peppery spiciness. Bready-fruity, only slightly astringent-bitter, very warming finish with an aftertaste of cloves and apples. I sort of felt reminded of sipping a classy port wine. Magnificent.

In bottiglia.

wow. im a dark brew fan, and this stuff took me completely by surprise. appearance...meh, average looking. The 10% alcohol stamp got me curious, so i nabbed a bottle.
Its very dark, opaque like guiness...but with absolutely no metallic or bitter taste. Very deep and fruity. Sweet instead of bitter. Slight hint of grape. Very smooth, and fruity aftertaste, you would never know how much alcohol was in it until you examined the label.
Amazing beer...its a pleasant surprise to learn that not everything black tastes either smoky or steely. Great stuff!

Bärnstensfärgad med kraftig och rik arom. Riktigt gott och enligt mitt tycke La Trappes bästa.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 jolo (603) - Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 20, 2012
Bottle. A hazy orange colour with a high, frothy, off-white head. An aroma of malt, alcohol, caramel and spice. The taste is heavy sweet and medium bitter. A full body, oily and creamy texture, soft carbonation and a medium long duration. A complex and really nice beer.

Tap at Cheeky Monk. Poured a deep amber with a khaki head and good lacing. Smell is yeasty, spice, clove, light banana, caramel, and dark fruits. Taste is sweet prunes, dark fruit, raisins, caramel, spice, and banana. Begins sweet, somewhat spicy through the middle, with an alcoholic burn on the finish. Sticky/syrupy mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Complex beer with flavors all over the place; very, very, sweet, but yet seems to work. Good beer, but would probably be a good candidate for cellaring.
4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Koskela (38) - Marysville, California, USA - MAY 16, 2012
Beautiful aroma full of maltiness the color is brown and cloudy with yeasty goodness. The taste is very earthy malty and fruity...not fruit like apples and oranges but fruity fruity. An excellent beer id buy over and over again. You can smell the alcohol a bit but you cavt taste it.. Truly a great beer one i will enjoy over and over.
