COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Quadrupel is La Trappe’s heaviest ale with a stunning amber colour. Its warm and intense flavour is rich and finely balanced. Malty sweet, slightly burnt, and pleasantly bitter with a sweet aftertaste. Quadrupel continues to ferment after bottling and offers aromas of banana, almond, vanilla and others.

Pours a cloudy ruby color with a good amount of off whitehead. Aroma has malty, hints of citrus, belgian yeasts and spices, and bit of alcohol smell. Flavor is sweet in the beginning, turning slightly acid near the end. A bit of carbonation with tiny bubbles tingle giving this a nice mouthfeel. Decent quad, a little harsh but I still enjoyed this one.

Bottle. Pours slightly nearly clear dark amber with a medium, persisting, tan head, good lacing. Nose of ripe fruits, alcohol. Aroma is very complex, with malts; yeasty fruits, grapes, apple juice, sweet orange syrup, banana coming later; lots of caramel; some spices, vanilla, cinnamon, maybe some cloves too?; alcohol. Taste is deep sweet, with a medium bitterness to balance. Not cloying at all despite the sweetness. Very smooth palate despite the high alcohol content. Full bodied, syrupy, medium carbonation. Somewhere between a good mulled wine and an old port. And a maple syrup. Undiluted. Very, very long sweet caramel and fruity finish. Absolutely fantastic!

Bottle. Pours hazy amber, two finger off-white head. Highly carbonated and some yeast. Aroma is loads of dried fruits, raisins and belgian yeast sediment. Brown sugar. Taste is sweet, caramel, molasses and fizzy carbonation that makes it really drinkable despite the high ABV which also is notable in the finish. Could use some aging! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark amber with a little haze. A little off white head that disappears fairly quickly. Aroma of dark fruits, and a little hint of alcohol. Malty flavor with minimal bitterness. Boozy, pretty good.

330ml bottle bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long.

Preparation: bottle stored at refrigerator at around 4°C; Popped at room temperature at 12°C (within recommended temperature range) onto the Chimay chalice.

Looks: Cloudy hazy amber brown colour with thin trace of dirt- like yeast sediments; One finger head and crumpety off-white foam which lasts for 2 minutes; Excellent sticky lacing with quite fizzy carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant and sweet malt which can be smelt half a foot away, with strong fruity banana, silky vanilla, almonds (stronger as the beer warms), plums, light raisins, bubble gum, sugar, cream, light chocolate, very light alcohol, light Bel yeast and spices. Sweet and tempting!

Taste: Medium sweet amber malt, with strong plum, dark fruits, thick caramel, burnt toffee, banana flesh, strong molasses, light alcohol, spices, Bel yeast, lemon, strong bitter hops and sharp grass.

Body: Mid to light. Creamy and quite slick palate.

Mouth Feel: Moderately thick amber malt base with incredibly strong caramel which provide a base for layers of dark fruits, fruity banana, toffee and molasses for layers after layers of smooth, velvety sensation. Quite comfy and really entertaining!

Booze and Sweetness: The 10% abv is hidden most of the time, very well-managed, never screaming and blended in well with the complex tastes. The molasses is very strong but never cloying, seems to bring out the best in the phenolic spices. Great!

Hoppiness: Spicy aroma, with equally strong in lemon, hop cones and grass in taste, a standout against most Abts or Quads. Bitterness is sharp and quite potent, a good balance against the caramel and molasses for an abrupt, strong sweet and bitter finish.

After Taste: Wet, sweet, creamy and fruity to mouth.

Comments: Taste and palate-wise, its closest rival is Sint Bernardus Abt 12. While the latter impresses with big fat and rich maltyness and intensity, this one features some clever layers of really fruity esters, thick slap of toasty caramel, neat sweet booze and strong bitter hoppiness to make a name of its own. Not as rich as I wished for, it still an impressive Quad. Highly recommended of course and what a nice way to celebrate my #800 ratings! :-)

Bottle. Hazy orange-brown with a firm and creamy off-white head. The aroma is fruity, caramel-esque, of yeasts and spices. The flavour is sweet with ripe peach, nectarine, caramel, yeast, pepper. Nice, not complex, but nice.
