kepano (239), Meudon, France Jan 24, 2006 My ongoing assessment of the Tripel style hit a new obstacle when I visited Amsterdam. For once I was not greeted with the usual golden straw color but rather a deep resinous orange with a slight haze if held up to the light. The fluffy white head lasts longer than La Trappe’s other creations and produces thin creamy lacing that hangs for a short moment before it cascades down the glass. The aroma held more resemblance to the brewer’s Dubbel and Quadrupel than my previous experiences with tripels. Indeed the familiar creamy pear and dried fruit frangrance found in La Trappe’s range was clearly noticeable. Banana, bubble gum, sweet butter, nectar, honeysuckle and apparently Gorgonzola (in an epiphany my friend Nicholas had) emerge in the nose. The fresh aroma of entering a florist shop is also apparent but rapidly submits to the salient alcohol notes. Again far from the conventions of the style but nonetheless inviting. In the flavor appears a creamy blend of pear and pineapple the progressively softens as you hold it on the tongue. With a brusque swallow the heavy alcohol creates what I can only describe as a cheesy fruit sensation. Peach and apricot merge with a flavor that even my turophile palate cannot pinpoint. In the aftertaste, some grains develop, reminding of milled wheat or corn. Generally it is genuinely a likeable beer albeit far from what I had expected.
milljam (500), Norman, Oklahoma, USA Jul 1, 2009 Aroma is mainly fruity (mixture) with notes of yeast. Minor alcohol presence on the nose. Flavor is also fruity, interlaced with yeast and some alcohol. Not bad, although the sweetness can be a bit much at times. BVery (314), Burnsville, Minnesota, USA Jun 27, 2009 BOTTLE: rich gold pour, tannish head. Fruit and malt on the nose, plus some spice. Taste is mildly bitter, spice, fuller-bodied, very good tripel. JanEric (60), Meppel, Netherlands Jun 26, 2009 Gold-blond beer, small head. Aromas of fresh fruit. Tastes intense, dense, fruity, some honey, rasp or black berries? Nice finish,long-lasting. thewombat (59), Brooklyn, New York, USA Jun 25, 2009 Aroma is light and uninteresting. Slightly fruity. Pours Golden tan with nice lacing and light head that quickly disperses. Taste is dark fruit, fruit punch and a bitter finish up front. Palate is light and clean.
Lowe1983 (1012), Fairborn, Ohio, USA Jun 15, 2009 Pours an amber color with an off-white head. Aroma is dark fruits, caramel malts, and a hint of alcohol. Flavor is similar with a dry almost sweet finish. Slight warming but not too much. michael-pollack (2192), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 15, 2009 750ml Bottle: Faint aroma of grains, slight caramel, light plastic, and some fruit. Poured orange in color with a tiny head that disappeared very quickly. Cloudy. Sparkling. Many large-sized particles throughout. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of malts, slight yeast, caramel, light spices, grains, slight butter, and slight honey. Thin, tingly texture. Average to lively carbonation. Sweet, honey, slight caramel, and sweet malt finish is lightly dry. deyholla (185), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 28, 2009 Bottle at the Copenhagen beer festival. Poured a pale golden with minimal white head. Aroma was of a sweet perfume. Flavor begins quite sweet but ends metallic and alcohol lingers.
